Warrant, the RIAA doesn't care about what you 'download,' in fact, they have no reasonable way right now to even know that information. What they care about is what you 'share' with the public.

They use the same programs that everyone else does to search for all of their music online. They have a list of X number of songs that they consider to be high profile, copyrighted, and want to persue..

They simply do a search for this music and find users that are offering them. If they find them, they may query that user to see what else they have and make a list.

By simply starting a download from that user, they can get the users IP, and all their data collection is complete. You can't argue that they are breaking the law by downloading the music, as they own the copyrights to the songs.

They use this information of what songs you have and throw it in to some algorythm that tells them how many people have 'possibly' downloaded and re-shard this file from you, and that is where the enormous fines come in to play. I share it with two friends, they share it with two friends, they share it with two friends, on and on and on.. By assuming the song has now gone to 3,000 people, all originating from your machine, you now owe us $150,000

Simple solution, download like a mofo, and don't share shit.. at least for now.. I'm sure they will find a way to rectify that problem in the future, but it's one hurdle at a time.
