Kills and deaths have no impact on your rank.
As for the shutdown question, it depends. If the server crashes, then no... because the program ceased functioning. Likewise if the connection to WOL is lost... there's no way to send the data, hence it's not sent. If the server admin types "quit", the current game is ended and the ladder points calculated on the current score/winner and sent to WOL.
Theoretically, yes, you're in the game less so if you leave you'd lose a smaller percentage of ladder points. BUT, unless you're a total n00b, it's better to stay and get as many points as you can so you lose less. The better scenario varies depending on your rank in the team and how much time is remaining in the game by the time you realize it's hopeless.
