Does anyone know how to fix a scratched disk (its decently scratched up)? I heard about putting toothpaste on it, letting it sit for 10 minutes then whiping it off with a lint free clothe dipped in luke warm water then drying it off. I was going to try it, but figured id ask on here first! Any tips?! Thanks

A CD-ROM is made up of layers. On one layer you have the label, on another you have the reflective bumpy surface that reflects the laser at different wave lengths, than you have the plastic layer over that which protects the bumpy surface. When you get a scratch on this plastic layer, it effects the way the laser comes back, filling in the scratch will fix this. If it's scratched deep enough that you can see through the disk, there is no way to fix that, it would be more or less a coaster. It would be easier to scratch the bumpy surface through the label side, than it would be to scratch this surface through the plastic side.

If it isn't too badly damaged then warm water will clear the marks. A fingerprint is worse than a single scratch. A fingerprint can prevent a disk from being read where as a scratch may cause the device to slow down and read slower.
If it is really scratched (lookinglike somoene took sandpaper to the disk) then you can either buy a new one or send it to a disk repair company who run it through a machine which slices of a thin layer of the plastic to make a clean reading surface.
You'd be suprised how many people pick up CD's by touching the plastic on the bottom, you hold the edges and place it in the tray.

My little brother grabs is PS2 games by the bottom all the time. And he get's angry when they don't work.
I do have a small little disk cleaner that can get finger prints off real good like. But it can't fix scratches.
