The navigation is way too out of place, I thought it was an ad until somebody said something. I would move the main navigation to the left side of the site and set it up like the other tables are - just simple words in a simple box; simple can often be better. In return, move the recent topics and search boxes over to the right side.

I would make the search table the same width as the one above it, too.

It might add more to the "feel" of the site it you didn't have the lighter-colored box behind the main content area either.
