The game has quite a large learning curve, so don't expect to be bossing it on the first few games, if you played hon or LoL then you will find this game easier to get into.

Skip to 10:00 if you want to skip basically what I say below
There a few roles that characters fit into and they can fit into multiple
Carries - Damager basically, need lots of farm to be any good during the game but very effective near the end e.g. Juggernaut
Jugger guide http://www.dotafire.com/dota-2/hero/-65
Tanks - Good for team fights as they can stand till the end taking all the damage e.g. Tidehunter(Also a support and initiator)
Tidehunter guide - http://www.dotafire.com/dota-2/hero/-9
Support - Some characters are just better played by getting support items, this is probably due to them having a support ability e.g. Keeper of the light
Kotl guide - http://www.dotafire.com/dota-2/hero/-98
Semi-support - Can do average damage not mainly focused around support items, these hero's characters are usually "initiators" also e.g. Sandking
Initiator - They basically start the team fights, usually by using their ultimate which does high damage right off the start

The characters I listed are relatively easy to play so I suggest using them if playing for the first time.
If you want almost a sure way of winning, play Keeper of the light, in the lower skill bracket which is what you will be in at first. People don't really realise that support characters are essential and pick 5 carries as their team since carries usually get the most kills
The reason being is that the "farm" you get during the game will not split well between 5 people, so support characters should get less farm but make up for it in the items they get to support their teams carries and harrasing the enemy team's carries during the laning phase.

Never bought it and isn't registered as gifted...
I'm going to believe in ghosts if it disappears just as suddenly as it showed.
EDIT: Must have been from the BETA. It shows as retail and I found the Dota 2 BETA key I redeemed in my inbox (never got around to play the BETA).
Guess they granted full access to BETA players or something?
