This is completely pointless, what we should be doing is signing a petition to have them release the source code.

Exactly. Open-Source is the only way Renegade can survive. I mean, how many times can you modify and improve on a closed-source proprietary game?
EA can always make thier own Free Software license like Netscape did with the NPL.

whats it mean open source, dose that make it leagle to edit the exe file and make it into a patch like ren alert is doing without paying money to EA?

No. Open Source means, that it's open source. You get the "GPL'd" source code of Renegade, you can edit anything and everything you want. But you have to make available your newly modified source code to anyone who asks (Part of the licence). If you don't want to do that, you have to pay them. You also can't sell it unless you purchase a licence to do so.
And, Renegade Alert is not a patch, or even an addon for Renegade. Renegade Alert is just a mod that is being distributed and implemented as an expansion pack to Renegade. (And the Ren Alert team is not paying EA anything to make the mod.)
