Have you tried different servers? Have you tried reinstalling 3.4.4?

As for WOL: TT uses a completely separate distribution of WOL (directly in the game folder), which shares no files or registry keys with the "shared internet components" thing Renegade uses by default. That's probably why it works in TT, and you'd probably have to update WOL as it says to get it to work with 3.4.4 too.
