So I wiped my desktop with the factory CD for the 2nd or 3rd time last night. It has been a while since the last time but I get hit with that virus that blocks the task manager and says you need to buy shit to fix certain problems.

Anyone know of any easy to use FREE (not trials) programs that are likely to block these attacks?

Usually use Norton but in between jobs at the moment so I can't justify $40.

I know there have been topics like this before... but I am sure that there have been a lot of changes in programs since then.

Oops... meant to be in general discussions not heated. Can a mod please move. Sorry.

I used to use AVG but in the last few months I've transitioned over to Microsoft Security Essentials. It's been working great so far and it's what I've been suggesting to friends and relatives now. Give it a shot. It's pretty low key and obviously free.

Well I don't know of any decent free ones but I can link you to a very good 'free' one if you like.

do NOT use Norton, its a piece of junk.
AVG is good, as is the Microsoft Security Essentials option.

As Jonwil said above, DONT use Norton, your computer will be greatful.
I use Sophos. I've had it for a couple of years now, and it's been really good. Haven't any viruses, or problems Smile

Microsoft Security Essentials. So far it's the most... 'pleasant' free antivirus that I've ever used. Also, not downloading shady garbage. Razz

Microsoft seem to take care of the most harmful viruses and keep up to date to protect against them, security essentials ftw

I personally use MSE (laptop) and ESET Smart Security (desktop).
The latter is payed but can be used for free by grabbing the new trial license using NodLogin every month. I really like ESET myself but MSE is great free software (if your windows is genuine that is).

Also, what I did aswell was running the Imunizer from Spybot S&D on both my laptop and desktop for that little bit of extra preventive protection.

Scanners monitoring PC:

ESET
Microsoft Security Essentials

Scanners also used to just scan:

Spy bot
combo fix
Spyware Terminator

Other:

Spy Blaster
Hijack this

this is what I use, but honestly, ESET Works wonders for anti virus and firewall and shit for the browser, spybot for the hidden tricky shit and comofix for any rootkits that spybot almost never finds

I guess I will give the MSE a shot.

I am not especially found of Norton in general but we never had a problem break through them. As soon as my subscription runs out though I get hit with some dumb shit. Almost makes me wonder if it is built into them so when you run out you want to renew fast (conspiracy joke).

Blocks my task manager and causes those stupid pop-ups saying your computer is about to explode with aids. I honestly don't know where they are coming from any time I start putting games on this desktop files start getting stupid. I have found all sorts of weird things buried in odd places.

Guess I'll just keep the games off here don't play them long anyways.

You might want to try a few things when you install the anti virus to. Install it in safe mode. Also run msconfig and disable every bootup program, it might stop that virus from ever starting.

Microsoft Security Essentials is very good. @ ssnipe: you should not have 2 scanners run in the same time, they'll just hinder eachother.

You can find me in The KOSs2 (TK2) discord while I'm playing. Feel free to come and say hi! TK2 discord

I have been using MSE on all of my PCs for over a year now and am very pleased with it. Doesn't cripple performance and just gets on with its job without nagging me all the time to do things.

True, but I have not seen any issues yet Smile
