So I wiped my desktop with the factory CD for the 2nd or 3rd time last night. It has been a while since the last time but I get hit with that virus that blocks the task manager and says you need to buy shit to fix certain problems.
Anyone know of any easy to use FREE (not trials) programs that are likely to block these attacks?
Usually use Norton but in between jobs at the moment so I can't justify $40.
I know there have been topics like this before... but I am sure that there have been a lot of changes in programs since then.

do NOT use Norton, its a piece of junk.
AVG is good, as is the Microsoft Security Essentials option.

Microsoft seem to take care of the most harmful viruses and keep up to date to protect against them, security essentials ftw

I personally use MSE (laptop) and ESET Smart Security (desktop).
The latter is payed but can be used for free by grabbing the new trial license using NodLogin every month. I really like ESET myself but MSE is great free software (if your windows is genuine that is).
Also, what I did aswell was running the Imunizer from Spybot S&D on both my laptop and desktop for that little bit of extra preventive protection.

Scanners monitoring PC:
ESET
Microsoft Security Essentials
Scanners also used to just scan:
Spy bot
combo fix
Spyware Terminator
Other:
Spy Blaster
Hijack this
this is what I use, but honestly, ESET Works wonders for anti virus and firewall and shit for the browser, spybot for the hidden tricky shit and comofix for any rootkits that spybot almost never finds

You might want to try a few things when you install the anti virus to. Install it in safe mode. Also run msconfig and disable every bootup program, it might stop that virus from ever starting.

Microsoft Security Essentials is very good. @ ssnipe: you should not have 2 scanners run in the same time, they'll just hinder eachother.

Liquedv2, yew need to branch out a little on your thinking. I'm sure you'll twig it soon enough, but you're barking up the wrong tree.
The map is budding with new ideas and great game-play, AitcraftKiller just has to get to the root of the problem, it seems to have him pretty stumped right now.
Leaf him alone, he's doing a good job. I'm going to go out on a limb here, and say this map isn't fir you.
Anyway, this thread is really starting to lumber along, all this over some sap's map? I thought the game was dead, but this thread at least is poplar. It makes me pine for the days of yonder.
