We ARE hosting on a virtual dedicated server. It's a piece of garbage and I'm not impressed.

The new server costs $159 a month but I will be using it to host more than just RenForums. It will also host the official Renegade ladder, any lingering RenGuard stuff (which I'm probably going to officially deprecate and shut down the backend in the next few months), some n00bstories stuff, and probably a couple other personal sites that I have in other places.

I'm the bawss.

150,- dollars a month is overpriced. for 1/2 price you'll have a AMD Phenom2 X6 1090T 3.2 Ghz Black Edition

Renguard is not important anymore and websites shouldn't use that much load.

edit: also tbh, i wouldn't ever consider donating anyone who does anything else besides community stuff. So if people would donate you, they actually sponsor your private stuff aswell.

You should put a "Monthly Server Cost" meter somewhere on the site that could keep track of money that is going to be used to pay the server bill (as money goes in, the meter would rise until it fills up). I'm sure that if something like that was visible, some people might be more inclined to donate a couple dollars here and there to you.

$150 a month pays for more than just a good server. It pays for an amazing data center with excellent reliability, fast response to tickets, and effective communication about even the remote possibility of downtime. When you see what you get for a "cheap" server, where they just change your IP without telling you, have lots of downtime, and don't answer OUTAGE support tickets for 48 hours or more, I don't want cheap servers anymore. They're not worth it.

I don't care if you or anyone chooses not to donate for the server. If you have a moral objection to helping me pay for something we all use and enjoy, that's your choice. I wasn't asking for donations to run the server. I make more than enough money to pay for it myself, and I'm willing to do so. Some people wanted to donate, and I provided the information for them to do so. I greatly, greatly appreciate them, not because I would have had to shut the site down without them, but because it lets me know that my efforts are appreciated by those people enough for them to go out of their way to show it.

BlackIntel has always paid less than 100 euros, and only one time we had complaints about our hosting. That one time was a calculated risk we took, due to expenses at the time. We paid about 45 euros while we would've had to pay 65 or more if we went with a decent host.
Now we have a nice Dell PowerEdge R210 in colocation and pay 40 euros a month. We're hosted in a Leaseweb datacenter and never had any issues really. If you look at their client list you'll see that they're not exactly a cheap or small ISP. Hell, their statistics state that their network has had an uptime of 99,999%.
Either way, I think that you're paying too much for the new server and you paid too little for your current server. Surely there would've been a "in between" solution, both money and performance wise.

Honestly... I never really take too much notice to the apparent down times. I do see them on occasion, but they aren't anything I can't live with. There is more to life than Renforums.

You really should save yourself the money instead of paying top-dollar for us. I honestly don't really think that we are worth that much money to begin with :\

Speak for yourself, cheapass! Very Happy

No, really, the server will be used for more than just "us", of course.

I don't have the time to price shop and move the site a dozen times until I find a provider that operates in a way that I am happy with, with minimal/no downtime. I know SoftLayer is awesome, and they did give me a free processor upgrade, double RAM, and double HDD, so I'm pretty damn happy with it.

It's my money, can't I just spend it the way I want to?

First off, of course you can spend your money the way you want it. However, if you then start telling us it's expensive, don't be surprised that we explain how you could've saved money. I think you shouldn't see that as criticism, more as a way of trying to help you without us actually donating.

I mean, free CPU upgrade, double RAM and double HDD is pretty awesome, BUT, if you don't actually use it, it's still pointless no?

I didn't say it was expensive. You think $159 is expensive. I don't.

And again, I did NOT ask for donations! Someone asked for my PayPal information and I provided it. If I needed donations to run these forums, I would have a progress bar at the top to make it obvious that donations are required to survive. Plus, we probably would have shut down years ago for lack of funds.

And I usually find and create enough stuff to work a server hard. I also appreciate the peace of mind that extra RAM and HDD space gives me.

I'm the bawss.
