Battlefield 3 has definitely captured my complete interest, like Renegade did back in the day. After playing the BETA extensively, I actually haven't had any interest in prior game titles (Crysis 2 for example). DCOM Productions will be hosting a 64-player server to sponsor the game, which will be live on day 1 and will be a regularly moderated server as well.
Edit: Jerad, they implemented the commo rose command system. Day 1 patch is 222MB in size and fixes pretty much most if not all the issues (actual bugs) reported in the BETA, among with numerous other changes.

What info there currently is on that, is the following:
NO command panel (team commander)
YES commo rose (like it was/very close to BF2)

I've only ever played one previous Battlefield game and that was Battlefield 2142. But what is so wrong with helping out your team by spotting enemies for them? Why is it "cheesy" to do that? I think that it's much more cheesy to have some omnipotent "commander" giving you aid like they are a hand of god or something.
Granted I think there should be someone with the ability to assist the whole team with supplies and artillery... but the individual soldiers should not have their ability to assist the team removed by taking away their ability to call out the locations of enemies.

I haven't touched the singleplayer, but the multiplayer certainly didn't disappoint. It was everything I expected it to be - all the improvements BC2 offered (destructible environments, leveling, etc.) put into a BF2-esque game. DICE have certainly learned from their past mistakes and issues in previous games while effectively stepping it up a notch.
A couple things didn't go smoothly though - for one, I think the web-based Origin is terribly bad. The design feels very disproportionate, and Origin doesn't seem to offer anything to make it superior to Steam or just some other independent BF3 server client. It doesn't display server ping in IE, and there seems to be problems with joining servers. Sometimes the "join with party" function does not work at all.
There are also server-related problems in BF3. Servers seem to crash a lot, mostly before the next map loads, but sometimes in the middle of a game too. Lag spikes are a problem too. Performance also varies (but that's probably related to my specs).
So the game itself is great, and it's definitely an FPS highlight for this generation. But the release was not smooth because you find yourself constantly looking for another server after crashes, then have difficulty joining it, then join one at the end of the game, etc.

My biggest concern is that you control just so poorly. Functions like proning take way too long than they should especially when you're trying to stand up from a prone position.

I actually like the longer time to get to and up from prone. Keeps the dolphin divers at bay.
