would it be possible to make the patch check the client computer's operating system and have it install the patch automatically into the correct directory without having the person select it themselves? it'd probably prompt more people to install if they didnt have to think about how to go about it

What it says and where it is installed is the same
E:\Program Files (x86)\EA Games\Command & Conquer The First Decade\Command & Conquer Renegade\Renegade\Renegade.exe
I had to select the correct path myself though.

C:\Program Files (x86)\EA Games\Command & Conquer The First Decade\Command & Conquer Renegade\Renegade\Renegade.exe is what it is by default (in the registry) but that's not the ACTUAL path by default afaik.
The default path where it installs to is: C:\Program Files (x86)\EA Games\Command & Conquer The First Decade\Command & Conquer Renegade(tm)\Renegade\Renegade.exe (for 64bit OSes that is)
So by default it would seem the registry entry doesn't even point to the right location. Did I use enough of the word "default"?

The installer should now auto-correct things like these, and if it cannot figure out the right path for decryption of the serial, it will ask you to reenter your serial in the install process. It should almost always be able to determine this automatically though.
