My ping is anywhere between 46 to 500, this causes me to be unable to play any games for more than maybe 20 minutes. This computer is the only one that's having the ping issue. No extras such as a PSP, phone, laptop, etc. have this issue. What can be done to fix this?

I'm currently working on getting a USB extension cord.
The slightest change in positioning of the USB Receiver has a huge impact on ping whether it be up or down.
I'll post a pic of my Receiver if needed
(I don't know the terminology very well so if the words I used are wrong, I hope you get the the idea)

The wireless usb adapter is the problem, SMC stuff is crap.
Get a new wireless usb adapter or get an internal pci wireless adapter.

And remember that you get what you pay for... cheap stuff might seem like a good idea at first but it often has astonishingly bad performance.

I bought a higher mid-range WiFi-G PCI card nearly 10 years ago and it still manages to maintain excellent signal strength and throughput. Been using it to connect my main gaming rig to the internet since I bought it and never had any lag issues. At this point it's easily the oldest component in my build and I am probably going to keep using it until they stop putting PCI slots on motherboards and go PCIe only.

So basically SMC sucks and i should get something better.
Before I waste my time getting the USB extension will it have any effect on the lag at all?

Depends if you can get it into a position where it happens to get a slightly better signal with the longer cable... but it might simply be the hardware isnt up to the task and therefore will never achieve a stable connection. Still, USB extension cables are always useful to have around and they are quite cheap so it's probably worth trying it first.

If you *do* wind up replacing it a dual or tri antennae PCI or PCIe card is probably the way to go, saves having silly USB sticks jutting out of your PC at odd angles and doesnt have to share bus bandwidth with other devices on the same internal USB host... assuming your confident enough to install something inside your PC that is. I personally think USB WiFi adapters are a bit silly since laptops have WiFi built in these days and PCI cards are generally much better value for money and give superior performance.

Probably should have thrown in it is not a Laptop.
Well the USB extension i already have isn't very long but has been helpful for other devices so I'll give it a shot, if it doesn't work I'll find something to get as a better replacement.

PCI / PCIe cards are for desktops Wink I only mentioned laptops as I was saying I think external USB sticks for WiFi are silly on both laptops and desktops
