the question's in the title. Which version of the Bible do you use, and recommend others use? Does it matter?

I'm not a Christian, of course, but I have a King James.

I am currently reading the 3DS Max 2010 Bible, does that count?

BTW, I was raised a christian, though I consider myself an atheist/Buddhist/Hindu.

We pretty much stick to KJV or NKJV.

KJV is harder to understand but more rewarding.

I have no idea; I was just given the Bibles throughout my life and I held on to them and read them.

None that I know of.
Although I wouldn't be all that surprised if I heard of one.

I am technically catholic but was only baptised etc because the schools around me are religion specific schools.

I see myself as more of an athiest and tbh, I have never read the bible, do not own one and probly never will.

Id rather read the back of a shampoo bottle than the bible.

I have not been practicing religion of any sort the last year, but the version I have used is New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures (NWT).

I find the choice of what Bible translation important because the misunderstanding one line of text can cause.

Luke 23:43,

American KJV reads, "And Jesus said to him, Truly I say to you, To day shall you be with me in paradise."

NWT reads, "And he said to him: "Truly I tell you today, You will be with me in Paradise." "

Anybody notice the difference in how those two examples read?

The difference is in the placement of the commas, and how they cause a pause in the words.

"Truly I tell you , today , you will be will me in paradise."

Now the context is Jesus says this to the repentant sinner next to him when he is dying.

If you use the pink comma to read the text it looks as if Jesus was saying they will be in paradise later that day.

If you use the green comma to read the text it looks as if Jesus was saying they will be in paradise at a later time, not limited to that day.

Most Bibles will read with the comma before "today", like the pink one. That however does not coincide with later sayings of The Bible and Jesus.

According to the story Jesus was in the tomb for 3 days, then he was resurrected, and then he walked the earth for 40 days before ascending to the Father.

According to American KJV John 20:17 reads, "Jesus said to her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brothers, and say to them, I ascend to my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God."

So if Jesus did not ascend to the Father for 43 days after his death, he could not have meant that they would be in paradise that day.

Little things like the placement of one comma can completely make or break an idea/belief.

NIV and NLT are what I know and find to be the best. King James can just be harder to read and understand. ESV is similar because it is a word for word translation, whereas NIV is thought for thought. I cannot recommend any others because I haven't read them.

How come religious folk aren't considered nerds?

I mean... they exhibit the same characteristics of a nerd who is involved in some episodic fictional material. Why is it considered different for someone to say Book X, section Y:Z, line Q "blah, blah, blah..... N." as opposed to someone else saying "Star Trek A, episode B, time stamp C "blah, blah, blah.... M."?

I mean, the differences are nil.

Therefore, all people who study the Bible and learn it inside out, line for line, meaning for meaning, are nerds.

stuff like star trek purports to be fiction, whereas religions claim to be pretty important. that's probably the biggest difference.
