Due to some situations I need a new windows 7 serial so here are my choices, I read up about each one but I want to know from somehow who may have more personal experience to answer.
I have a custom built computer (Everything new, no brand named anything that includes mobo, ram, cpu, etc)
1)OEM Version of windows 7
2)Upgrade to Windows 7 form Windows Vista
3)Or System builders license
Now I want to ask you guys if one of these would work on my custom built pc and which one is better (and cheaper) I have windows 7 ultimate, but I guess I have to buy a new copy this is why
http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/genuinewindows7/thread/a2444f34-0aff-4f 29-a8ac-67e28b0c0285
so I mind not getting all the extra software on the ulitmate edition, I just hope all the versions look the same and have same SPEED so I plan on choosing one of the three options above and wanting it to be Windows 7 Home Premiuem

Thank you for this
cmatt42 wrote on Thu, 06 January 2011 19:30 | I got 7 Professional 64-bit OEM for free via MSDNAA. You should be able to contact your school's computer science department head or one of the instructors for a form you can fill out to get into the MSDNAA.

Thank you I will go ask them tommorow, but its community college so I doute it

Goztow wrote on Thu, 06 January 2011 23:57 | I thought an OEM was always linked to the computer you bought it with. But I may be wrong.
|
I also heard it links ot your hardware but heard rumors if you replace your mobo, hdd or even ram it no longer works and you have to buy a new one
so far thanks for all your help guys, I just can;t believe I was scammed like this

FUD, you may use it with new critical hardware. (in the past there have been cases where a PSU power cable was labeled critical hardware, and thus allowed you to buy a OEM Windows version)
OEM does limit your rights on support from MS. You'll of course get the Windows Updates, but for actual support (phone/e-mail) you should talk to the builder of your PC (you in this case).
|
I never get tech support from Microsoft, I always fix stuff myself. In my case I am just scared that when I replace a hardware piece that maybe one will break, and they tell me I have to re buy it.

Just means that if your motherboard breaks for example then for windows to continue to work you need to replace it with the same model of motherboard.
|
Just need to reactivate windows, or do a reinstall wiht a different type of MB. If you've used up your activations (I think you can activate about once every 3 months), you can just call to MS and they'll give you a code which will let you reactivate. They'll ask if you have Windows installed on more than one computer (of course not) and you tell them that your MB broke so you put in a new one. They'll see the problem, ask you for the telephonic activation code generated by your computer and then they'll give you the code you can use to activate your Windows.
|
Well yeah you can do that but I found it easier just to get the same motherboard when my motherboard broke on me lol.
|
That requires the same type of MB still being build, which sometimes is not the case
|
Yeah I was actually quite lucky. The retailer I bought the MB from initially no longer sold that model so gave me a cash refund. I think I had paid about £125 for the MB from them. So I took that cash and went looking for another retailer and found the MB for £75 with another place bringing down the initial cost of my computer lol.
