I'd say Lenovo (if you want a tough laptop), HP, Dell, Asus, and maybe MSI.
I can really only vouch for HP as I have owned 2 HP laptops (on my second one atm, I sold my 1st one, it was still in good condition) and one Dell.

Although HP does own Compaq, those laptops usually just suck imo and Sony I can say that I have heard bad things about those laptops, at least in the past anyways.

I just bought a Toshiba Qosmio and have had it for about a week. Pretty nice piece of equipment granted I spent $1,600 on it.

Asus Best hardware and crappy or no tec support. They make some very good machines.

I have a Toshiba laptop and I've had it for 6 years never had a problem so I know they are reliable.

What exactly do you plan to use the laptop for? School, work, gaming, general use (web browsing, emailing, etc.)?

If he was planning to use it for gaming, then he would have to spend alittle over a $1000 (Alienware AFAIK)

I have a Toshiba Satalite L500-1XL, not the best for gaming but its reliable (£600 it was)

I'm currently using a Gateway laptop with Windows 7.

I've used Toshiba and Dell too.

I have a HP... it is a POS, it would do better as a fucking griddle as hot as it gets. It's a miracle that it has not caught fire or combusted...

I have an old Toshiba, it has been to hell and back, but it still works fine. It doesn't seem to ever get half as hot as the HP.

Also have a Gateway, had it for a while but have not used it much due to the charger outlet breaking. It seemed like a decent laptop before it broke.

Every laptop I have had though has had problems with the chargers/outlets either breaking or shorting out.

I didn't do an in-depth amount of research, I just found this and thought it suit your needs:

9 out of 9 people gave it 5/5.

I would recommend a Lenovo or an Asus or a Toshiba as good choices.

Don't buy an Acer, a SONY or a HP/Compaq as all 3 brands are junk (and yes I have had experience with computers from all 3)

ASUS hands down.

I would definitely stay away from Dell/HP/Alienware. Alienware used to be good, until some silly company named Dell took over.

Acers are OK - but not the best quality.
Gateway - haven't heard anything good/bad
Toshiba - I own one (not a gaming lappy) and give it a beating, it's on 24/7 and runs great...so no complaints there.

Personally I would go for ASUS because of their awesome warranty (spill warranty ftw?) and the fact that they make quality desktop hardware back them up well. I haven't heard the greatest things about their customer service though, something to consider.

Gaming laptops have an extremely high hardware failure rate, so beware of that before you buy one.

Lenovo used to be the consumer PC division of IBM. (or rather, IBM sold it to them)

So anything good about IBM laptops (ThinkPad etc) seems to have transferred over to the Lenovo products.

So I guess its narrowing down between Lenovo and ASUS and maybe Toshiba.

My family had nothing but trouble with Sony, I would stay clear of them.
