Is anyone out there still running on Windows 2000? How important is it that scripts 4.0 runs on this obsolete operating system?

I'd recommend deprecating it, it's now 10 years old (And insecure, and unstable, etc), and the bulk of marketshare is XP or greater, IIRC.

Does it even support DX9?

Yes, people still use Windows 2000.

Why? Would it be too time consuming to add comparability for it?

I have a Win2000 laptop I use sometimes, but the idea of Renegade running on it is laughable at best.
It was indeed stable though.

Shouldn't support any version of Windows that has reached/exceeded Microsoft's EOL date imo. People using insecure software are a major drain on society.

The way I see it, if they are running 2000, they probably have their reasons. However, they most likely aren't focused on playing games.

If it requires a lot of effort and/or it will drain the overall experience of the people who don't use 2000, then I suggest omitting it from the supported OSs.

If it's of no real consequence, then I really don't see the harm in including it.

Or, if what you're doing with this information is patchable, you could always just omit Windows 2000 support and just have people who use that OS have to download a patch.

Ok, turns out this point is moot anyway.
I have found out that both Visual C++ 2010 and the DirectX version we are using (and for that matter the DirectX version scripts 3.4.4 used) are incompatible with Windows 2000.

So we cant support Windows 2000.

According to netmarketshare windows 2000 only has a 0.39% market share of all operating systems on PC's (PC's extending further than what I would classify as a PC, but whatever...), it's probably not worth worrying too much about.

More importantly, amongst GAMERS (based on Steam hardware survey Sept. 2010) the market share of Win2000 *and* earlier versions is less than 0.12%.

Norton has 1.75% as far as steam users go.

In that case, forgot about it because theres nothing you can do anyway?

Please deprecate it. I know at work we only have one system left on 2000, which we are in the process of migrating to a newer OS.

Seriously? About 1/3 of Windows 2000 users are gamers? That's actually a lot more than I had expected... especially since there is such a small amount of people who use Windows 2000...

Not necessaraily, they two surveys are based on different sample populations and almost certainly different sample sizes which may skew the data in one direction or another. You would need to know the hard numbers behind the percentages to make any sort of guess as to the proportion of <INSERT OS HERE> users who are gamers.

A lot of those Win2000 / Norton gamers are probably teens who have installed Steam on their parents clunky old machine which they have not managed to pursuade them to upgrade from.
