so this wretched, villainous old slug is over here now as an honoured guest. i'm not sure whether that's more or less offensive than when that medieval gangster King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia was given the same honours.
this guy sums it up pretty well

While people pretend to understand how the word works, the reality is that no one has the slightest clue.
There is absolutely nobody in the world that fully understands any one item; be it a system or a person or whatever. There might people who consider themselves professionals in certain fields, but that by no means means they know all there is to know about their given field.
This, tied in with human's natural yet baseless fear of openly admitting to ignorance, is what allows certain crimes and whatnot to go on.
The average person would rather admit to not knowing something because "they don't care" rather than admit to making a mistake or having the wrong insight.
Bad things like this will happen and continue to happen because few too little people will openly confront their actions by questioning the motives of the people they blindly believe in. Most people will just allow it to continue because they don't care enough to actually delve into things that are actually happening. They trust their good name and can't comprehend them doing something bad. Some will even go as far to outright defend something they don't fully understand.
..In this case, people would defend Christianity and the Pope because he is a Christian... but at the same time be unaware of what he really has done.

bmr_71 wrote on Sun, 06 February 2011 00:18 | The pope isn't responsible for shit. He may be held accountable, but accountability != responsibility.
An individual is responsible for his actions.
A leader may or may not be held accountable, but it doesn't change anything if he is or isn't, since he isn't responsible to begin with.

I agree with this.
I've noticed that people tend to allow themselves to blame people with power more easily than people without it.
I don't believe it's right to punish someone for something that they, themselves, have never done. Even if they are 'linked' to said crimes, if they themselves haven't actually done anything, they are under no obligation to be held responsible.
For example, if someone is going around bragging and proclaiming that they are a Nazi, why should they be punished for doing so? Anyone can believe what they want to believe. That's what makes everyone different. It isn't right to discriminate against them because their moral code conflicts with yours.
Saying you like to kill people is much different than actually killing someone.

The Vatican has one of the best spy networks in the entire bloody world. The Pope could order those responsible to be found and excommunicated and purge his church of the rot in less than a year. Thus exposed and denied the Church's protection, they could then be effectively pursued and squashed by law enforcement, and given the prison-raping they all so richly deserve.
We're talking about the one and only religion that is literally a nation unto itself- there are Vatican embassies in nearly every country that has a Catholic presence. The Roman Catholic Church has been around longer than any other organized governing body, their power structure has existed in its present form since before the invention of the printing press, and they have their fingers in places even the CIA would salivate over getting a look at. If they wanted the problem gone, it would be gone. It isn't as though child rape is part of a Catholic priest's vows, after all- these pedophiles are a cancer that has been allowed to spread through negligence, incompetence, and a desire on the part of the Church's leaders to save face rather than drag their Church's dirty laundry out into the open in order to stamp out the problem.
Ironically, the longer they keep at the cover-up game, the more attractive they look to the next batch of child-raping asshats. In order to get rid of them, the Church must first make itself a dangerous place for a pedophile to be. They have the means to do that, just not the will.
"Arms discourage and keep the invader and plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property. Horrid mischief would ensue were (the law-abiding) deprived of the use of them." - Thomas Paine
Remember, kids: illiteracy is cool. If you took the time to read this, you are clearly a loser who will never get laid. You've been warned.
