Howdy, all
I just upgraded my computer. The new one has Windpws XP, and will not load Renegade. It will start and go to the dark mottled red screen where it develops the radar, weapons monitor, etc, then cancells itself out ond will not allow registration info. the load just stops and I'm looking at my desktop.
Help....I'm suffering from withdrawal

First off - you said you upgraded to Win XP. Is Renegade still installed from the old version of Windows ? If so remove it via Add/Remove Programs (in the Control Panel). If Renegade isnt listed in add/remove programs simply delete the folders (and open regedit.exe and find all keys related to westwood -> renegade «« BE VERY CAREFULL INSIDE THE REGISTRY for you can make life very very bad)

I don't use XP and dont know much about it but some general troubleshooting issues would be :

1.Clear the c:\temp folder contents
2.Clear the c:\windows\temp folder contents
3.Reboot & try again

This gets rid of any temp files placed during installations (more importantly CORRUPT installation files.

No, it is not an upgrade, but a whole new computer. I've tried all the things you listed.....no luck still.

You can use the alternate install from here:

http://www.cncnz.com/downloads/renegade/utils2.shtml#reninstall

Works fine for me on Windows XP though?

This sounds like the all too common, Renegade not being compatible with very many video cards, problem. What video adapter does this new computer have? You need to make sure that you have the latest Win XP compatible video driver installed, plus at least DirectX 8.1. If your video card is a Voodoo, sorry, your out of luck, unless they finally came out with a compatible video driver. I suspect there are other cards out there that have the same prople. WS never did anything about it. This forced me to buy a different video card and it worked just fine after that.

It seems as if the S3 Savage video card needs to be added to the list of non compatible video cards for Renegade. There is another thread in here that has the same issue. They have an S3 Super Savage card. If you look in Westwood's knowledge base it does not list the S3 as a compatible card. You may just have to get an Nvidia or ATI card. Sorry, that is what most people do. If you try and get support from EA on this, they'll probably just ignore you till you go away, like they did me. Mad

It may not be a service pack issue, I loaded renegade straight after the initial install of XP Pro, no service packs or updates installed. I had the same problem where it crashed out when loading up the installer, it ended up being a faulty stick of RAM causing my problem, but I'd try the alternate installer supplied by Sk8rimuk, that managed to get renegade installed even with my faulty RAM, but it died later and gave me version mismatches whenever I tried to go online.

Yeah, like I said, it was the faulty RAM stick, got it replaced under warranty and all worked like a charm.

It seems that, although the Windows site did not have a driver update for the video card, the manufacturers site did. Loaded it and all is well at last.
I'm smilin now !!!
