How do you figure? When I buy something I have two choices. Either I have to go out and buy it. Something that has all the draw backs of any commercialized shopping outing. Nothing says easy like traffic, lines and stupid people just to find out they don't have any in stock. Or I can get it online which means I get to wait a week for it assuming the order actually goes through. All so that I can line someones pockets with their over priced item.
On the other side I can simply sit at my computer, fire up that torrent and come back to it in a little while. Keeping my money where it belongs - in my pocket.
The TV industry is smart. They have embraced the internet and found a way to make it work for them and the users. The music industry is just stupid and the movie industry is kinda there but has the edge that people are willing to pay for the quality video.

Sure, but it's not all new stuff. A lot of my LP's and cassettes that I've transferred to my PC are second hand. So there's probably a big fat elephant in the room here, and that is that I haven't directly supported plenty of artists.

I will give you buying music is fairly easy if you ignore the whole restrictions depending on who you buy from thing.
I don't know why you guys are having this discussion. Prince has already informed us the internet is dead!

Amazon.co.uk, and you're done. (tm).

The map is budding with new ideas and great game-play, AitcraftKiller just has to get to the root of the problem, it seems to have him pretty stumped right now.
Leaf him alone, he's doing a good job. I'm going to go out on a limb here, and say this map isn't fir you.
Anyway, this thread is really starting to lumber along, all this over some sap's map? I thought the game was dead, but this thread at least is poplar. It makes me pine for the days of yonder.
At the end of the day, life's a Beech.. Who wood of thought it?

You don't support the artist when you buy from Amazon or itunes, dont kid yourself. if the artist uses bandcamp or something similar, you can support them. else, buy their merch, go to their shows, spread the word about them if nothing else, but buying from itunes/amazon wont help them shit.
|
Then how on Earth are they making income?

The things he mentioned above like buying much and going to shows. I'd imagine most have some kind of contract-based income with record labels, but I doubt it's a % of sales or anything like that. More than likely a lump sum.

$550 for a ticket?
Fuck me.
At that price, they can have their live concert; I'll download their music for free - kthxcyalater.
If it were cheaper for a ticket I'd go for sure; and I know downloading their music for free is morally questionable; yet such is the world we live in.
Why should I make an effort to make less morally questionable decisions; especially in relation to downloading music; when millions of other people don't give a shit. It won't "turn the tide" of "good vs evil" (the epic saga continues? dundundun?).Thus, when I die some time from now, I can say with confidence that I will not have the regret of downloading music for free on my conscience.
There are already enough diehard fans who attend there shows and buy their merchandise. The rich shall stay rich; and my money shall stay in my pocket.
Sure it's probably an overly philosophical/moral/*insert your favorite adjective here* approach to the topic; and most likely containing many flaws in logic. Yet, take it for what it is (stupidity?).
Whatever the outcome, I'm sure we'll all care in 100 years time.
Edit: I don't mean to come across as a person who's personal philosophy = fuck the world, as long as my life semi decent; it doesn't really matter. I don't care what hardships my decisions may consequently bring to bear upon people in 100 years time. It's just that I'm not willing to pay for music that has been marked up in price by 200% just so some guy can have more money than he knows what to do with / can spend in his lifetime. Sure every song by every artist that I have deserves every single cent that it's worth; but you know what? - No, just no.
Sigh, there I go again.

CarrierII wrote on Mon, 19 July 2010 01:25 | Small time gigs in bars / clubs are OK, but *points at the fact I live in the UK* Coldplay or U2 gig tickets are easily £300 ($550, roughly) or more - and all the live recordings I've seen of gigs from big-name bands just seem to consist of noise from the crowd, rather than the instruments on stage.
|
That must suck. I saw Muse at the Oracle Arena which isn't Wembely or anything, but isn't small at all, and it was less than $40. Who the hell would pay $500 to see shitty Coldplay?
Actually, I take my previous statement back. I saw Queen when they were doing their + Paul Roger tour and I think I might have spent like $50 for that.

That's pretty upsetting. However, my point remains that I'd rather have the artist make some money instead of nothing at all; same goes for certain labels.
But I'll probably be buying more CD's in the future.
