I see people in-game with huge nicknames, but I thought the maximum was only 8 characters, so how do you access these long nicknames?

theyre not using Wol/XWIS to connect. Instead, I assume they use directconnect or RenegadeResurrection. But its been some time since i used either, maybe someone else can spell out the specifics.

At the end of a mission in Renegade you are given a rank based on how many enemies killed, objectives complete, etc. The icon is one of the lower class ranks.
