My experience so far: WASTE OF TIME...
I should've played Renegade or Bad Company 2. Perhaps that if I would've had MW2 that would've been an alternative as well.

Completely agree. Also, the chat feature seems to be borked in the beta, so it feels like I'm playing with a bunch of bots. No FPS nowadays seems to do socialising and community building as good as Renegade. I don't know about Battlefield because I don't play it but attempting to make any friends online in MW2 is a complete fail mainly thanks to the lack of dedicated servers.

I also wonder why I haven't found a server that switches map every so much rounds. I guess that feature isn't done yet Angry

Besides different maps and more retarded weaponhandling it is BC2. Also the classes are EXTREMELY limited and unlocking goes VERY slow.

I like BC2 100 times more.

Funny. People are complaining about this in StarCraft 2's beta, also. What you don't realize is that betas aren't made for chatting.

What features did Renegade have to promote socializing and community building, again?

It has usable chat. Which is more than you can say from other games.

So does Counter-Strike. If that's the criteria we're evaluating, then Counter-Strike must have a fantastic sense of community and be a great place to socialize! Even more so, considering the playerbase is several dozen times larger than Renegade's.

I hope you're joking since CSS has created some of the largest gaming communities in the world.

Are we evaluating size or quality? Let's keep our criteria consistent. nopol says "good" in reference to the Renegade community, but nobody in their right mind would argue this community is "large". CSS is certainly a "large" community, but there are very few places where I am more likely to be called a faggot and have my parentage brought into question for not clicking fast enough, so it wouldn't be fair to say it's a "good" community.

What I mean is that Renegade's relatively slow gameplay inadvertently encourages people to talk to others ingame and that is how many people got engaged with different communities. I'm fully aware that betas are meant to dig out problems in the game and the problem of chat screwing up for some reason after you type for the first time IS a problem. On the socialising bit I'm not referring to the MOH beta but the FPS genre in general now. How often do people talk to others in MW2 (I keep using this cos its the only other FPS I play...) apart from calling others "faggot tubers" or "hackers"?

Gotta dash, now medical appointment. More points possible later.

I know what makes Renegade good. The IRC outputs and such. Almost every decent player knows there is somekind of channel for his favorite server where he can see who's playing and chat with them. This is a fact that is often neglected with new games, and even with BC2 there are no serverbots that can connect to an IRC channel and spam iwht with useful information. It can only output to it's own program.

Plenty of games have that functionality. I know I've seen it in Counter-Strike and Call Of Duty 1 and 2. The only thing that's different is that in Renegade, because there's a relatively smaller number of servers that are relatively close-knit, features like IRC outputs are spread much more quickly and thoroughly.

...Except MW2 players consider MW2 to be a deep, innovative, and astounding game that is the best thing to have ever been made.

But so goddamn many seriously think it's the best fucking thing ever. It's not.

Also, I'm not against quick, simple, easy entertainment. But when it comes to FPS's, it's pretty fucking terrible. It just feeds off of the basic hormones of every teenaged guy.

FPS's, to me, should be limited to horror stuff. It's a perspective, not a genre of HURF DURF I SHOOT U FIRST LOL I WIN multiplayer bullshit. Or, rather, it SHOULDN'T be that, but it seems to have become that.

I can somewhat agree with you.
Most games where you can just jump in and play as if you've played this game for a long time, are horrible and decline in value really fast.
Games where it actually take skill have a longer replay value, but you can't just hop into a game and play it well. You look like an idiot to the other players and they have a higher chance of insulting you.

The balance between these two is a key to a great game, and Renegade has a considerably good balance, but gives a disadvantage to the newcomer at this time.
