Gizmodo found/bought a lost 4th Generation iPhone from someone who claimed it as lost and found in a German bar in California yesterday after it was misplaced by the Apple baseband software engineer Gray Powell. They've made a few articles and videos about it here.

http://cache-02.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/4/2010/04/500x_iphone1a.jpg

Some of the details are, two cameras (the one at the back, and another front facing one), camera flash, micro SIM, and what claims to be a higher resolution screen. There may be other features which are not known, since it won't take any of the older firmware, only OS 4.0.

Apple sent Gizmodo a formal letter asking for it back, so there obviously is something there.

It looks the same as every other "smart"-phone on the market at the moment... rectangular, big touch screen, couple of buttons on the sides. Big wow.

My phone has no touch screen, no fancy media crap, no "smart" features and yet it manages to make phone calls and send texts perfectly well and the battery lasts over a week between recharges. I feel sorry for all these suckers with "smart"-phones which are basically crammed with features that are not really that useful and need to be plugged in once a day to keep them alive thanks to those power guzzling huge screens.

my phone is the exact same way... and i don't have a camera on it yet as you said... it makes phone calls and sends messages perfectly (or as perfectly as it gets using Sprint) i don't really see a point in this... i guess just more money to spend on pointless extra shit that you wont really use

My phone is built to survive being outdoors, because you know... people still go there, sometimes.

I pity the person who tries to take an Iphone on a hike, or adventure trail, or even running, TBH.

It's a publicity stunt. Apple sent it to Gizmodo to write an article in an attempt to kill the momentum of the HTC Incredible.

I disagree. I bring my iPhone when running, rowing and doing weights. Not a single dent in it.

i use to listen to music on my ipwn while having gymnastics. and its actually not jumping out of my pocket, so bite it. its good even for running, being up-side-down, walking, whatever etc.

What we think, or what we know, or what we believe is, in the end, of little consequence. The only consequence is what we do.

On a risk of a derail...

Is it just me? OK, Apple released the iPad on April 3rd and who knows how many people went and bought them? Now, a new upgraded version is coming out on the 30th? wtf is this practice? Somebody fill me in!

It's not an upgraded iPad, it's exactly the same but with a 3G chip in it that takes MicroSIM cards.

It's like having a car, and then the manufactureres release the same car but with built-in satnav and a turbocharger for <currency>XXX more a few days later. It just took them longer to fit the parts.

They just know that some people will buy the first version when it comes out, and then a few weeks later they will also buy the upgraded version just to say they have the best. If they release them at the same time they won't make as much money.

It also gives the manufacturers a group of paying, 'bug-testers' that can point out any flaws in day-to-day use.

Drop your Iphone into water.

Drop your Iphone from 3' onto concrete.

If it still works, I'll withdraw my comments.

Not exactly my iPhone, but my brothers 3G iPhone slid into the bath while he was in it. He told me the story while i was syncing music onto the device days after it happened.

My 3G iPhone has dropped from my pocket height onto concrete, and yes a crack from one side to the other has occured, it's been like that for nearly a year and a half now (September 08) and has worked perfectly since.
