double-double animal style is nice, but it's a lotta cali hype...same with five guys on the east coast. those 6$ angus burgers that carlsjr/hardees offer are likely the best I've tried from a chain. red robin is supposed to be really good as well.
worst is probably taco bell or something similar...only mexican take-away i trust is chipotle.
lol

Do the opinions of any other places in the US matter? On issues outside what the best bible and/or gun to have, of course.

Pacific Grove is a pretty okay part of town, but if your dad really did grow up in PG you would know that In-N-Out really is all that, especially when compared to any other chain. He probably has a below-average impression of In-N-Out because the nearest one is in Salinas, and everything sucks in Salinas.
As for In-N-Out's Christy tendencies, it doesn't bother you if you don't look under the cup, and even if you accidentally do, you only have to ponder upon the behavior of their CEOs to be reminded they're no different from any other company (Other than how delicious their shit is!)

in-n-out got these sissy patties, they're nothing else than superior big macs - which is great, don't get me wrong. however, a true burger aficionado mixes it up with thicker, flame grilled traditional burgers, basically superior whoppers. the mountain burger at the hi-lo cafe in weed, california takes the cake in this category, followed by the 6$ burger. optional fancy high brow 3rd burger variety can be found at zuni in san francisco, which is excellent in its own right.

You may or may not have a point with the places I've never heard off, but they have the inherent advantage of not being chains. There's something to be said for how In-N-Out maintains it's amazing quality while simultaneously covering most of our state. If I'm driving down to San Diego or up to San Fransisco or to some of the parts of California nobody cares about, I know that if I see that big yellow arrow I'm in for a treat. Practically anywhere in the state! This hi-lo cafe in Weeds might be better, but to get one I have to be in Weeds too, and how gross is that?
As for the $6 Burger...Anything burger that gives you ketchup/mustard by default can't be top-teir. Oh, and those disgusting sweet pickles they put on! Disgusting.

That's a classic burger...I'm sure you can order your own ingredients, even though I enjoy the original ones. Regardless, I picked it for the nice, flame-grilled, thick black angus beef patty. The in-n-out/big mac/wendy's style maybe-meat is nice, but that's just one type of burger. I need variety.
