obviously there's such a thing as excess force, but I figured people were smart enough to know that hitting someone with a baseball bat is going overboard.

shit like spanking, grounding, taking away certain things (nothing that would make them unable to live, obviously) and etc are ways to punish a child. baseball bat to the head is retarded, but I guess common sense isn't people's strongpoints.
