I think one (like me) can be strictly opposed to cheaters without wanting to jab a knife into someone's skull, and not be insane.

As far as I know, you are not the type of person I was talking about.

I'm talking about the people who take cheaters so incredibly seriously that they fail to grasp the reality that it's merely a game they are playing.

Now, being "insane" doesn't necessarily mean they are bad people. But it does mean that they have an unhealthy perspective on something that is meant to be a leisurely activity.

There is a difference between fighting against cheaters to uphold the enjoyment of the game for others and fighting against cheaters because they piss you off. However, I would go as far to say even people who are committed to ridding cheaters for the good of other players are riding the border of insanity themselves.

Anime... cartoon... hentai...? Whatever, I'm not familiar what the correct word for it. Click the source link in the first post and you'll see what I mean.

No, I meant your choice of adjective. The word "little." But it wasn't supposed to be taken seriously. Rocked Over

Communism + Censorship + Internet Cafe + Big fucking knife + A cheater = Knife in skull.

Hilarious, even though I believe cutting the hands or at least fingers off is a more suitable punishment for cheating.

So if it would have been some member of the Valve staff (Counter-Strike lead producer, whatever?) who stabbed the cheater, it would be ok? To him, counterstrike is not a leisure activity, it's his core business. I do not think it is at all important whether it is a leisure activity in a virtual world or a business activity in the real world. Violence is just wrong.

I really hate this "just a game" argument though; to you, the game may be just a game, but others may make money out of it or put a lot of time and effort in playing, supporting or improving it, making it something more to them. Compare it to art for example. Some people attach a lot of value to it, I personally would not want to own most of it even if it was given to me for free. That does not mean that I am going to say to an artist showing his work "hey, it's just art!". Imo, that would be rather disrespectful. I think saying "it's just a game" about anyone who attaches value to games is pretty much the same thing.

I do agree with you though; knifing someone is pretty insane, regardless of how seriously people take the game. Regardless of what their reason is, actually.

That's a misapplication.

They don't make their money from playing the game itself. They make their money from the sale, distribution, and support of the game. Their main focus may be the game, but it isn't in the sense of leisure. They may or may not be gamers themselves that support the game, and in that lies the difference. The company that supplies the game and is compelled to uphold its enjoyment is required to stop cheaters from harming the game. That is a requirement for their job, not a self-appointed position of authority.

What I was talking about were people who simply play the game and take it upon themselves to war against cheaters of their own free will and effort.

I agree with you, however, that, whether or not it's about a leisurely activity, resorting to violence is still wrong.

I'm not saying games aren't important to me or anyone else, and I'm sure quite a few people here including myself have spent months, in some cases years tweaking and perfecting the game client/server to our ideal vision of what we want the game to be. Not to mention the ridiculous amounts of money server owners dish out for hosting.
All I meant by "it's just a game" is that if tomorrow I was suddenly unable to play my favorite games it would definitely suck, but it would by no means screw up my life. Hell, it might even have a positive impact for me.
Either way, whether it's a game or something else, people need to learn to control themselves.

Then say that, say that violence is never a solution, don't say it's just a game. Even if this would be true then still we can agree that cheating is aimed at ruining other peoples fun and thus in itself wrong as well, right?

I do not think it's a misapplication, it just depends on what you consider to be a 'leisure activity'. I do not think gamers who take games so seriously would describe themselves as simply players and playing their games to be a leisure activity: it is not just a game to them, for whatever reason. You can argue that they should not attach much value to it, but imo that is entirely up to them. As long as they do not become violent I see nothing wrong with that. I do agree that they should not appoint themselves a position of authority they do not have though, but I am not sure that that is the case here.

I think we basically agree though, we maybe only disagree on wording. Smile
