Hey guys, I haven't been here forever, wow it's bee awhile. I was feeling nostalgic and looking through some articles about Renegade, when I decided I really missed playing this game and would love to give it a shot. Are there still multiplayer servers out there? Are there people still playing? This game is 8 years old (I've been playing it for 7 of those years) and I've never come across another game like it. It has a really unique multiplayer experience that keeps bringing me back.

But enough of me rambling. Is it worth me to dig out the disk and install it?

Actually, there are still about 88 gameservers using the FDS still online on XWIS/WOL. Now this does include some moded servers like APB and Reborn, but still it is a lot.
You can view the entire list here: http://www.blackintel.org/renegade/xwiswol
On playercounts: They are declining, but there are still enough players to get a decent game going.

Wow, for an 8 year old game that's a lot more than I expected. Does everyone still use the text chat or is teamspeak being used? I don't know how I'll deal with text communication after being able to yell at my teammates over Xbox Live.

I think all major communities have something like Teamspeak or Ventrilo. I know BlackIntel has a teamspeak 3 server for the purpose of yelling at each other Razz

Very worth it to dig it out and install it.

There's still plenty of servers out there. I highly recommend n00bstories.

Haha, Jelly Server, they've been around forever. I've been reading up on the Renegade Wiki on all these new strategies, mods and other new stuff; it looks pretty cool. I'm going to go find my serial code and get back into the action.

I found both of the disks (game and data) but I no longer have the cd case for them (meaning no serial number). What are my options? Can WW send me another one?

Could buy TFD, it is pretty cheap and has all of the older C&C games.

Clark probably has the best idea... also i highly doubt that WW would send you it due to the fact they no longer exist... EA wouldn't even take the time to send you one because then you wouldn't buy a new game causing them to not gain money

I took your advice and got Command and Conquer: The First Decade. It was only $20 so it was a pretty good deal. It's installing now so hopefully I will soon be back to murking people in Renegade.

Ok I've run into a bit of a snag. Apparently TFD isn't compatible with Windows 7, so it doesn't want to work. I can get to the WOL screen then it says an error message along the lines of "your version of westwood online is not compatible blah blah blah". Has anyone dealt with this? Will installing the unofficial 1.03 patch solve this?

i use win7 and it works, as for the WOL thingy, download APB (http://apb.game-maps.net/index.php?act=category&id=101) and install the wol components only, and replace it

I got the internet components updated, now it's telling me (when I try to log in for WOL) that my serial number is not valid. The hell?

So... why the hell did I just buy TFD? I'm in the same spot as I was before I bought this thing: no valid serial number meaning no online play. Did I miss something or am I just plained fucked?

nahh, i got TFD too, and my serial dont work online, so it might be a valid reason to get your money back, as it did not work as intended, sorta
gladly i found my 2002-3 version, dusted it off, and installed it

So there's no way to work around this? The serial included with TFD will not work online? Not even if I install RenGuard or update to 1.03 or any of this other crap?

Thanks for being patient and answering my questions. I'm just a little pissed I spent $20 for a serial so I could play online and I still can't.

Some of the serials work, but not all of them work online. Thats why its so f** lame by EA to do that, but o well. Best way to get a valid serial is finding your old one, or buy a old copy of the game, as i linked you
you could also see in your regedit if your serial is added there, if it is, the serial is invalid, if not, enter it, and it might work
