I have recently gotten confused about buying sound card and surround sound system, basically what i mean is i think i understand what these mean

but iv seen system that say
5.1
7.1
i think even 8.1
now are those the number on inputs/outputs and if so what is the .1 at the end like u see abov e(7.1 etc or 4.1)
and whats channels
iv seen one that said 7.1 8-channel
please fill me in and help me out understand this more
sorry for such a noob question
