maybe this can help you? http://www.techspot.com/review/209-ati-radeon-hd-5770/

I got the 5850 and it's an amazing card. Needs a big case though, as it's huge. Much cheaper than the 5870 and very much similar in terms of performance. I run COD5 on max settings with it.

It's quite the cost and performance gap between the 5770 and 5850; heck, it looks like you could score two 5770's for the price of one 5850.

What's your resolution? If you're running 1680x1050, then the 5770 will be great. I have the 4870 which the 5770 is comparable to, and it's awesome at 1680. However, if you're running at 1920x1080, then the 5850 will be more your speed.

Plus, if you want good DX11 performance out of the box when the games that support it start rolling out, you might want the 5850 because it'll likely handle DX11 much better than the substantially weaker 5770.

If you're not placing a priority on DX11, then perhaps look around on Craigslist or eBay for a 4870 or 4890. I got mine cheap and locally off of eBay, and there's quite a few 4870's on my local Craigslist that are priced really well.

Your statement about the 4870 is only true when you got the 1GB version as that will otherwise be in many cases a bottleneck on 1680 or higher resolutions.

Personally I was happy with my 4870 1GB edition, but am now more happy with my HD5870 Smile

Oh btw, it looks lik the HD5830 should be out end january, and should perform similar or better than the HD4890 but with DX11 and eyefinity.

It really depends on what resolution you are running.
And what quality you want. (I'm guessing high end)

Yet to say most of the carts posted are awesome but it mostly all depends on what kind of basis system you are running.
Example does your motherboard have pci-E 2.0 or what is your CPU?

Since I'm guessing you aren't buying a full new pc. And it would be a waste to buy a new high-end cart and then to notice you can't use it to it's full potention.

Also about directX 11 as far as I'm aware you would need an Ati cart for that. Since Nvidia currently is stuck at 10.
Also most of the Ati 4000 series can run Directx11 just fine especially the main feature of directx11 (teselation).

Just post your basic specs. (Like Cpu/motherboard)
Since it really would be a waste to buy a very new videocard if your system can't use it to its full potention.

I always forget about the 512MB variants of the 4870. Mr. Green

Apparently, it'll be priced under the $200 US mark, and it looks like it'll be a great card for the price. Maybe wait until it's revealed.

COD5 is not a very demanding game. What do you get in say, Crysis? Or the incredibly shitty GTAIV PC port?

GTA IV runs fine on my HD5870. Just need to make sure you don´t try to use more videomemory than your card has and you´re fine.

Too bad it's still impossible to get antialiasing on that garbage Xbox port.

Shitty port is right. I have a 4870 and the game still crashes after 20 minutes or so, even with all the details turned as far down as they'll go.

Although that could be an overheating issue on my part. Sad

What 4870 do you have? I have the XFX one with the horrible 'teardrop' cooler, and it used to crash a ton on GTA4. However, I updated the drivers recently, and that seems to have fixed everything up.

I'm not sure if my cooler is teardrop shaped, but it is XFX, and a half-gig varient. I thought I had the most up to date drivers, but I'll check again.

Also, if you've overclocked it, that could be a problem. I had a lot of crashes when I had my 4870 overclocked rather highly, and it wasn't just GTA4. So if the drivers don't help you out, it could be down to heat.

Just to throw in on the 4870 talk... my Asus 4870 512mb runs amazing. Only issues are relative to it being warmer then I would prefer, however, everyday tasks + idling I have my fan set to 28% which is relatively quiet and has the temp around 58-62 degrees C. When doing any gaming I up it to about 40% which is barely audible over music/game audio. Once again, stays around 60degrees.

If I set the fan to 20% (almost silent) then the temps rise up to about 80 degrees when idling. Not something I prefer but I've read these cards can run stable up to 110degrees.

Also this is with stock fans

Unless the card came overclocked and nobody told me, it shouldn't be overclocked. I never overclock my stuff.
