I have the urge to buy a new laptop... but I am cheap.

So this is what I am looking at right now.

Acer Aspire 5532

Priced at $375, I know the graphics card might not be the best for gaming, but it works fine on my girlfriends laptop. I really only play Renegade, and a few other older games. What I am wondering about is possibly the processor not being able to handle too much multitasking, but I am not a pc tech so idk...

Most of my pc usage consist of Ren, IRC, Photoshop, and forums. A lot of times all open at once. Will this laptop suffice for the price?

Also I know the 160 HD is small compared to what is out there, but I don't save the pr0ns lol.

Edit:

Ok, maybe that one is a little too cheap... also been looking at this one for a while.

Do NOT get a laptop. Especially a cheap one, they SUCK for gaming and will break within a year or two. Only get one if you REALLY, REALLY need to take it around a lot.

Trust me, if your PC usage really is what you said, get a desktop. It'll last longer and won't have near the problems. Just make sure it's upgradeable and you'll be set.

Build your own indeed.

Laptops should IMO always be bought new (or close to it) and certainly in brand new condition. Furthermore, I'd always get a high end one, because laptops suck. Sad

I got my desktop at home that I bought almost 2 years ago, it is still an awesome pc, but I can't set it up where I have been living. No desk space and no easy way to run a Ethernet ocord to it... thought about investing in a wireless usb or router, but still no space to set it up.

I have been using a 3 year old Toshiba, and it has done me good considering I dropped it off the arm of the couch and screwed up the charger plug in. But I would like something a lil better now... I still don't need something top of the line.

Think I am about to buy the Gateway.

I'd go with that too, since all the acers i've ever had eather got fucked up, basicly, or malfunctioned, and it was hardware/software issues. So i got my money back, still, it was a nightmare!

Well i would say you'll be better of buying/building a desktop, definitely when you dont have to go to alot of places with your PC.
I have a PC atm for less then €800,- which runs Crysis at high Big Ups
So getting a Desktop better then those laptops for the same price, will be pretty easy Thumbs Up

Else if you really want to go for one of these laptops, go for the Gateway.
Looking at both price/quality the Gateway will give you the best for the money. The Acer sucks imo.

Nothing wrong with laptops if there looked after right but a self build desktop is always better of course, I've had a Acer 6930 (9600 GT GPU) that I use for gaming at work and its solid (plays ren, l4d, l4d2 ect)

ATM Acer are one of the best you can buy IMO, far better than the likes of Gateway and Dell

The only reason mycurrent laptop survived thus far is that all I use it for is internet browsing. One of my old Gateway laptops worked for about 2-3 years before the hardware started screwing up and giving me relentless BSODs.

I agree, go PC if you can, they last longer. If you get a laptop, don't treat cost as a major factor, get a good high-end one that will last longer than the cheap ones.

Well this turned out rather well for me.

I went ahead and got the Gateway, but then somehow the idea came about to give the new laptop to my girlfriend and take hers. She had trouble taking hers to classes because it is a 17.3" and it is too big to fit in her backpack easily, and her shoulders dislocate all the time, so the lighter the better for her... so now I get the bigger one with pratically same specs. Satisfied

Personally I like my laptop to be small, otherwise I'd get a micro-ATX or mini-ITX system with decent specs.
(Laptop here is a Dell XPS M1330, PC has Ci7 & HD5870 Wink )

I like my laptop (HP Pavillion dv6410ca), it plays Renegade and quite a few Source games decently and it's still working fully after 2 years, only thing I've upgraded is the ram to 3GB.

I just wish my processor supported Virtualization though Sad

Ok... got a related problem. I have my TFD disc, I already know my Renegade serial, but I can't find the serial for the TFD part... And so I can't install Renegade on the new laptop without finding my manual or finding a way to retrieve the serial of one of my other pcs.

Anyone know how to retrieve the TFD serial (not Ren's)?

Thanks, also google finally turned something up useful for me. Here is something that I found called game key revealer. My Norton flagged it, seemingly due to it not being such a well known program... but there seems to be nothing wrong with it. And it could prolly help people with a lot of other game serial problems.

For 375 $ for that Acer, you cannot be ripped off. It will probably not be the greatest gaming machine, but laptops under 1000 $ never are any good at gaming anyway. My last two computers (before the desktop I purchased one month ago) were laptops: first cost me 1000'ish €, second 1350 €. Both were acers. I've used them for 2 years and then they were history for gaming. Laptops just cannot keep up with games, so don't bother using them for it Wink.

The laptop I just bought and my girlfriends that we got almost a year ago are great for us, they run Renegade and a few other games we enjoy with no problems. Both cost under $1,000. The Gateway ended up being $20 dollars more ($500) but came with more HD and a pretty blue color instead of the dull "coffee brown" as Gateway calls it.

This HP laptop I have now cost $700 almost a year ago, but it is still new enough for me. I don't play Crysis or CoD, or any other demanding games.

I got my laptop for about 800EUR at dell, which was including a 9cell battery. It runs games decently, for a Geforce 8400GS. I think the USD was pretty high back then, as it's already 2,5 years old.
