There's a few possible reasons:
1: You could have an illegal copy of Renegade.
2: Your serial could randomly be invalid. It'll say that on the startup screen for XWIS, though. Check that.
3: Could be a firewall blocking it.
4: You might be using the wrong password for your nickname.
5: You could be trying to make a new nickname via the new method (which is just putting in a username then a password), but that nickname is already taken.
Again, try to sign into WOL (Technically, it's XWIS now), and see what the startup screen says.
