I have seen this in movies and jokes and mostly ones that involve a blal ram where a Guy holds up a sign that says "john 3:16" or a guy with a clown hair and red ball nose hold up the sign, I dont get it, google is no help, can someone tell me why? why they do it, whats it mean, whats the joke.

So you're going to a massive sporting event that will likely be covered by TV crews who scan the crowd. You're also a devout Christian, who wants to spread the word of your faith to as many people as possible. You have a large white paper and a few sharpies.

Theirs something interesting, but really iv seen it a few times during my life, few tv shows , and recently even on family guy, its a running gag i just dont get what it means, I mean it has to be making fun of something, maybe the movie saber posted above?
