Nah, there's definitely nerdier. And, I don't find Alyx to be all that hot, personally... And plus, he was kinda responsible for the whole end of the world scenario, and hasn't exactly save it yet... so, yeah, that's kinda why it's actually somewhat decent.

Lastly, the fact that he DOESN'T talk means we don't have to sit through 40 fucking hours of cutscenes about how love can bloom on the battlefield or some stupid shit.

Like what? I'm talking about the major franchises like Halo, HL, GoW, CoD,..

Halo's story is overrated as well...I just think as an achievement, the Half-Life franchise is a little overrated and Halo underrated by PC gamers. Half-Life games are still enjoyable, but nothing stands the test of time like Halo. Almost 9 years old and the Warthog's physics are still top of the foodchain and the AI makes every firefight unique (unlike Half-Life 2, which feels like a pattern of enemies storming at you).

Almost 9 years old and the Warthog's physics are still top of the foodchain and the AI makes every firefight unique (unlike Half-Life 2, which feels like a pattern of enemies storming at you).

Halo's story I haven't actually gotten into as I lack an xbox currently (I guess it's the only reason they could get the damn things to sell, no one would buy 'em otherwise initially).

And, it's really the other way around- I can't count how many kids haven't even heard of Half Life but know everything about Halo and Call of Duty. But yeah, Half Life 2's firefights kinda suck sometimes (although a few parts are nice).

One thing the Half Life series definitely has over Halo and other series though is ambiance. Halo (after playing a few games with friends and shit), doesn't really have as much of that atmosphere. Not to say it's nonexistent, but it's just not as apparent. It feels a bit more like generic sci fi stuff most of the time. Then again I haven't really played Halo 3's singleplayer, might be why, but still.

Gears of War is HURF DURF STARCRAFT AND WH40K MARINE RIPOFF HURR. ALSO GRAY.

Call of Duty is HURF DURF MARINES ETC. Nothing new there.

Now, again, I'm not really talking about the general gameplay or the "physics" as you seemed to have pointed out- I'm more or less talking about story and setting, which is what you initially criticized. Gameplay wise, yeah, Half Life's multiplayer sucks yada yada (personally I like the singleplayer gameplay though).

One complaint I have with the series though is the amount of cut content from Half Life 2 :[ they really coulda had some awesome shit, but ah well.

TL;DR: Half Life 2 is superior to most other franchises in terms of story, setting, and etc.

Ya, Half-Life's story is highly interesting... even though it's a cheap way to build suspense by explaining everything in tiny steps - Gears of War follows the same formula - unfortunately, I'm a sucker for that shit. I really like the setting and agree with what you're saying, but where Half-Life fucks up is the dialogue. Making Gordon mute messes up the immersion, the opposite of what Valve wanted to achieve, and you simply care less for the characters because there's no real connection, the whole Alyx developing feelings for Gordon angle feels so fabricated. I'm much more connected to the strong silent type heros like the Chief and Fenix that only talk when it's necessary.

Stop hating on Gears of War...it's Michael Bay, but it's Michael Bay at his best. CoD is Tom Clancy at his best, but I doubt those games are going to stand the test of time like HL, Halo and perhaps GoW.

When I was calling Half-Life overrated, I was strictly speaking of PC gamers...according to every review, they're these flawless landmark games. They're masterpieces, but they're far from flawless. Halo is flawed as well, but the 83 score it has on Metacritic is a travesty for an equally important landmark.

Halo's story is better than HL's. It's just a whole lot more epic and has more overall depth.

But people still like HL not because of the story, but because the dialogue and continuous first person perspective. HL really puts the player in the shoes of the main character, which is what makes it so addictive.

Halo's story is pretty shitty. It borrows heavily from almost anything you'd care to name. Nobody likes it's story, and if it wasn't the first halfway-decent console shooter, it would have been an utterly forgettable series.

You obviously haven't read any of the Halo books, which are 1000% better in any form then the game itself. The game to me (i only played 1st full, and some of the 2nd) was pretty bland, i agree with that, (prefer half life SP anyday) but saying that the story of Halo is crap... lol.

Lies. It's your generic hollywood crap. Not to say it's bad or poorly done- it has its charm. But it's definitely not better than Half Life 2's almost depressing atmosphere. And hey, it doesn't have to use constant shades of gray to make a sort of "down" environment.

How can you say it's generic hollywood crap if you haven't played all the games? The Master Chief finished the fight hollywood style, but the way the story unfolds isn't generic. Half-Life is going the Matrix route, which sets it up for failure Matrix style...time will tell.

Halo has a better story by default.

Half Life 2 barely has a story at all! The entire game being given little information, then getting from point A to point B to learn a little more information, then going from point B to point C.

The only reason why it's good is because of what I mentioned above.

You could probably put the entire HL2 story on 1 or 2 pages of paper it's so short. If you were to put Halo's story on paper, it would reach dozens. Maybe even into the hundreds.

Also, Halo isn't just about Master Chief. He's just some guy who ended the fight. The war goes on for decades before Master Chief is even born.

Halo's story is just a loose collection of clinches, and would fit in a paragraph, taunts include:
Generic humans with power suits, supersoldiers, and space marines (Oorginal!) are in a war against some hive minded aliens that infest people (Which are not rip-offs of the Zerg from StarCraft!) called "The Flood" (Totally not a synonym for "The Scourge"!) that are controlled by an ugly-as-fuck creature called "The Gravemind" (Completely different from The Overmind from StarCraft!), and against a different alien society with wacko religious beliefs and a rigid caste system that's slowly leading to their demise (Not the Protoss, because they're bad guys lol!). Eventually, one of their Heroes who never shows his face narrowly saves the Earth by making some sacrifice and using (What turns out to be) good 'ol Human technology and ingenuity. Yawn.

You can go into more detail than that, but it would be like including every Hand of Nod that Havoc blows up in Renegade in a description of the C&C story.

Half Life doesn't have the sheer AMOUNT of story that the Halo series does (Probably because Valve aren't one-trick ponies and develop other series also, and Bungie don't), but they make up for it with an original plot and original gameplay. That's why Half-Life is consistently scored above Halo by basically every game critic who's opinion you'd care to take.
