Paying double? That's not true, Sony Vaio notebooks are generally more expensive than Macbooks, Dell notebooks are generally a bit cheaper. The price difference is greatly exaggerated and silly to use in a debate without providing an example.

High-end vios might be more expensive than low-end macbooks, sure. If you actually read what I wrote, I said for the same hardware.

JohnDoe wrote on Sat, 07 November 2009 04:01

Changing the RAM and Harddrive doesn't void your warranty - what else are you going to change on a notebook? That's more than enough for 90% of students' needs.

That's a different debate for a different--why it's better to have a good desktop than a laptop. My post was directed at Macs in general, not just notebooks.

Moot points.

Ah hahahahaha

-Students might be poor at your community college, but most of them aren't too worried about a price difference that corresponds to roughly one night of extensive clubbing.

See, this let's me know that either:
1) You aren't a student, you just pretend to be one to pick up college girls at your nearest club (Fucking creepo), or...
2) Your mommy and daddy pay for poor study habits at Arizona State, or whatever shitty college it is you go to.

-Pages is superior to Word, but I have the feeling I'm arguing with someone who, unlike me, hasn't written term papers with both. Pages simply gives you cleaner layout. I haven't experienced any compatibility issues, either. Keynote is miles ahead of Powerpoint...it's really easy to make a presentation look professional with those templates, Powerpoint doesn't even come close. I'm not an avid Excel/Numbers user, so I can't comment on those two.

Except that people don't use Pages, or Keynote. They use Office, because that's what everyone else uses. No man is an island, and you can make your presentation look real shiny but it won't do your professor any good if he or she can't open it up when you turn it in.

Come to think of it, I doubt your shitty mac equivalents are better. Otherwise, why would more people (Probably more Mac users, too) be using Office?

JohnDoe wrote on Sat, 07 November 2009 04:01

-Those last two points just show there your argument is heading - nowhere. So you're trying to tell me that my point about most students being better off with a Macbook is wrong because I disregarded the horde of IT-nerds and hardcore gaming-addicts?

Most people who buy computers tend to do actually something with them, not just check facebook and troll Renforums.

Another moot point until you give some examples. I'm eager to know which type of software that most students need can't be run under OS X. You know, browsing,

Macfags can't run Google Chrome, and since Opera started sucking with Opera 10, that's just about the only browser worth running. Don't bother bringing up FailFox. I'd rather not use that RAM-hungry bloated browser, especially if I'm stick with an already-underpowered Apple machine.

listening to music

Do kids still listen to music on their computer in the age of iPods and Zune players? I wouldn't want to carry around a laptop everywhere in case I want to listen to music.

JohnDoe wrote on Sat, 07 November 2009 04:01

watching video

Videos or movies? If you mean videos, you probably mean YouTube and similar sites, in which case refer to the browser thing above. If you mean movies, L2DVDPlayer.

JohnDoe wrote on Sat, 07 November 2009 04:01

reading documents, word processing, presentations,

Either you're using a shitty port of MS Office, or you're using some shitty Mac equivalent software that nobody else uses, and thus nobody produces files for.

Lol.

JohnDoe wrote on Sat, 07 November 2009 04:01

Not sure how things work in community college, but you won't be catching too many students around here that carry their mice along with them...it's an inconvenience that no longer necessary with a Macbook.

Maybe they're so in debt from buying their overpriced paperweights you call macbooks that they can't afford a $30 mouse? Inconvenience?

JohnDoe wrote on Sat, 07 November 2009 04:01

The second part is gold, tho. "I have never really used Apple's multi-touch interface, but it must suck because my Windows notebook's touchpad sucked big time!

All touchpads suck. Anything any touchpad can do, a mouse can do better. You might as well be debating why your skateboard is better than my skateboard, while I'm driving by in a car.

No, I just stalk the pretty ladies on campus.

What a fucking creepo.

JohnDoe wrote on Sat, 07 November 2009 04:01

Good to see you finally backing up your fact-absent argument with numbers. Unfortunately, they're incorrect Sad
http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macbook?mco=MTAyNTM5ODc
Click "get an education discount", type in your community college and watch the price drop to $949. Magic!

For the regular Macbook. You were talking about the macbook pro, which "drops" to $1049, not $999 as you claimed.

JohnDoe wrote on Sat, 07 November 2009 04:01

I'm pretty sure the casual gamers can either live with the games ported to OS X

If you call that living.

JohnDoe wrote on Sat, 07 November 2009 04:01

or get hold of a copy of windows (which everyone has laying around somewhere).

I'll accept this a concession of "My shitty OS can't run everything I need, so I'm going to get some help from the OS it bashes on TV every 45 minutes or so". g2G.

JohnDoe wrote on Sat, 07 November 2009 04:01

Again, if you're talking about the IT-Nerds and hardcore gamers, you might want to check up the definition of most, as in 'most students'.

If you mean the term "hardcore gamers" to mean "Anything who plays something more serious than Bejeweled", then I think you need to check the definition of "most".

Ok, Dover. I'm lying. All of the problems I had with using an Operating System designed for user accessibility and production were just an unfounded and potentially bias portrayal of my emotions for hating an OS that I had been looking forward to for the couple of years before it's release.

Derp derp.

R315r4z0r wrote on Sat, 07 November 2009 09:40

Seriously, do read what you say? Or does it just come naturally? "L2computer?" Two things:
1. I don't have to. If I can use the older model without problems, then shouldn't the new UPGRADED model work better and faster and more efficient?

You're right. If I ride a bike, then I can drive a car, drive a tank and fly an airplane, right? They're just upgraded models of the same thing, right? I shouldn't have to learn things!

R315r4z0r wrote on Sat, 07 November 2009 09:40

2. Why should I? Most people who own computers don't know it's possible to do even the simplest tasks. The features in Vista were designed to give users less of a hard time on their computer. So how is it that it takes more effort and resources to do a simple task on Vista than it does in XP or Windows 7?

If most people are really having so much trouble with simple tasks on Vista, then maybe they should go over to Macs, but not before picking up a few napkins to wipe up the drool all over their desk.

[quote title=R315r4z0r wrote on Sat, 07 November 2009 09:40]Or, for that matter, why did Microsoft bother to release Windows 7 in the first place? What possible reason could they have to release a new OS version so soon after the release of Vista?

R315r4z0r wrote on Sat, 07 November 2009 09:40

You are the one who needs to "L2computer."
The first lesson: No two people use a computer the same way. What positive experiences you had may not be the same for me and other people.

You found use out of Vista? Good for you. I didn't. It's not an argument. We are not discussing takes on a proposed issue or matter, we are discussing past experiences with a physical product.

Shouldn't these experiences be relevant, though? It's not the OS's fault if you don't know how to use it. Learn to, instead of wasting time complaining about it. If I didn't have any problems with it, maybe you should stop and consider that maybe the problem is with you?

R315r4z0r wrote on Sat, 07 November 2009 12:01

Also, what exactly is a Mac other than software?

Can't you run a Mac OS on a PC?

Apple, unlike Microsoft, produces hardware, software, drivers, and firmware. They're made to work together and with nothing else. It's possible to get OSX on a real computer, but it really isn't worth the effort.
