Asus tend to die more easily than Gigabyte to my experience.

The Core i7 860 has a "better" turbo mode which allows you to get more performance when you're only using 1 or 2 cores. The 920 is nice, if you want to overclock or need the triple channel. (I got it myself @ 3,8~4 Ghz).

WHY? It has a boxed cooler which is decent, and if you think it's too noisy get a Mugen2, cheaper, better and at least as quiet.

Good pick, but I would estinate that 500 to 600 watt should be more than sufficient, so I wouldn't spend so much there.

Grab a 750-850W Corsair/PC P&P PSU so you can get a second card at some point. If you don't want a second card, ditch i7 all together and go i5.
Frankly I'd go i5 unless you really want the extra PCI-E BW. I'll do up a full list later when I have more time.
Answer me a few questions though
What kind of FPS are you looking for
Are you willing to OC?
What games do you want to play, or will you play?
Dual video cards in the future?
Preferences towards AMD/Intel or ATI/Nvidia.

ASUS and Gigabyte are both good. Personal experience is pretty limited unless you build 50+ computers a year. I've only used one gigabyte and it was rock solid.

You're wrong, there is Core i7 s1156 and Core i7 s1336. The last one is the high-end socket with a high-end chipset, the X58. The first one is placed a bit lower than that, and lacks triple channel. Besides that they are pretty similar, execpt that the 860 will go faster because of the more aggressive turbo mode.
The difference between the i7 and i5 are pretty obvious. The i7 has hyperthreading and the i5 does not. Because the nehalem architecture is such a powerhouse, the hyperthreading can in real life apps make a difference of over 30%. At the very least that is worth the money to don't take the i5 but the s1156 i7.
Best bang for the buck. The s1156 i7 doesn't have the PCI-e bandwidth the S1336 i7 has, but this is due to the chipset (P55 vs X58).

Yeah sorry, I consider i5 to be non 1336 socket, even though the top ends are called i7. What I meant was, the 1336 socket isn't really worth it unless you need HT. I make use of it for SMP folding on 8 threads.

The s1156 i7's have HT aswell, so that is no argument. The only valid argument would be s1336 having triple channel + more PCI-e lanes, but that doesn't matter, as I know that gozy doesn't intend to go SLI/CF.

It sounds like you keep your computers for a long time, and since you're not too keen on upgrading, I'd say a system with an X58 motherboard and an i7 920 is the way to go.
However, I'd wait until vendor's roll out USB 3.0 ports on their motherboards, like Asus and Gigabyte.
Go big, or go home.

I'd go i5 750 or i7 920 and overclock. Paying an extra hundred bucks for .14ghz seems retarded.
Any gigabyte/evga/asus mobo should do you quite well for i5/i7
Decent set of 1600mhz ram, really need to choose i5 or i7 first.
WD Caviar Black 640gb
ATI 5850 or 5870 Graphics Card (DX11, good future proofing)
Case - Personal preference, antec 900, Coolermaster HAF 932 are both good choices, as long as it has decent airflow
HSF - Coolermaster Hyper 212+
Corsair HX 650W PSU
Any DVD Drive works
Really you should be able to get something decent for much less than 1500 euros.

Please get a different PSU, I'd go 600W just to be safe, Antec is OK, prefer Corsair, PC P&C or Enermax. Get a WD Caviar Black 1TB instead of the seagate, generally better read times. Also grab a CPU heatsink so you can do a bit of overclocking as well as having good temps.

Agreed. Forget the extra 4GB of RAM, and instead buy yourself a PSU from the likes of Corsair, Thermaltake's 'Toughpower' or a Seasonic.
A third party heatsink, with thermal paste is a good thing to get, even if you don't aim to overclock. It'll help keep things cool, and if you ever do decide to OC, you'll have that option.
