I think it is illegal due to the pharmaceutical companies and other such companies involved in the drug/acohol business.

growing weed is far too easy so there would be too little tax revenue from it as people would just grow there own, also people should understand that hemp and marijuana are not exactly the same

good news story from last month

i basically see drugs as being like religion. if an adult wants to do it, they shouldn't be told they can't... but if it makes you do bad things, you aren't strong enough to handle it. and most importantly, kids ought to be protected from it.

Marijuana was originally outlawed in the United States due to pressure from Cotton and other industries that were rivaled by hemp production. They employed the use of racist propaganda to convince people it was bad.

Today, it's illegal to keep the "war on drugs" running smoothly, and to keep private prisons full of non-violent offenders, so companies can get more of those delicious subsidy dollars. Who are some of the biggest supporters of the "war on drugs"? Prison companies.

This documentary provides a pretty good look at the situation.

TL;DR: it's all about money.

I personally see nothing wrong with allowing Weed to be Legalized, I don't think I will ever do it, might try it, but won't make it a habit. I know quite a number of people who smoke weed. I don't see them causing all those car accidents that drunks do.

Its pretty simple really.

If it was legal we'd all grow it, I mean its not that particularly difficult. Back when I was in highschool I used to smoke weed and it got to a point where paying for it was just too expensive so I grew my own in the shed.

Yeah you'd beable to goto shops and buy a pack of 10 for X dollars or you could just grow your own and the government wouldnt make any money from it.

Oh and while yes drink is bad for you and it makes you do silly things, you're the one thats doing it. I go out every (I try anyways) Friday with friends/family down to the local and get pissed however I don't do anything stupid I just have a 'jolly' time, come home, drink a pint of water before bed and goto sleep.

I dont smoke weed anymore and I havne't for god knows how many years but if it was legal I think I would actually smoke it again. I just cant be fucked now to go out and find a dealer and spend all that money.

get pissed

Kinda off topic, but this expression always made me lol since its usage is different here in the US (it generally means "get angry" or the like).

It makes me picture a guy walking into a bar, sitting down, and just getting really angry for no real reason.

First, I want to point out that I don't smoke or drink. If you take that to mean anything about me, you can ignore the rest of my post. (If you weren't going to already)

Honestly, I don't think anything that can't be a direct cause of infringing on the rights of someone else has grounds to be banned regardless of how bad or unhealthy whatever it may be.

Or, to put it another way... if you smoked some marijuana, are you violating the rights of someone else? No? Then why is it banned?

I would like to point out, however, that I'm talking in principle. Obviously there are dangers of having everyone legally stoned out of there minds 24/7... but then that's where usage laws would have to come into play.

No. Because, unlike just merely using a substance on your own, when you are put in control of a machine with diminished mental capacity, you become a threat to the safety of others. It isn't about your rights anymore it's about the rights of everyone else around you.

The way that you need to look at the law is not how it effects you, but how you effect those around you in respect to the law.

For example, the Constitution isn't giving you, specifically the right to free speech. It is rather telling you to tolerate the free speech of others. If you tolerate my rights and I tolerate your rights, then everyone gets tolerated and everyone wins.

However people don't look at it that way. Instead, they look at the law and see how it benefits them and how they can exploit what they are given to either A] gain more or B] put down others. It is a misconception because so many people say "This is MY right, now you have to respect that" while they fail to realize that the person they are talking to has the same rights as them.

This is why so many people think they are "right" when they protest to ban things that they deem are unacceptable or inappropriate. (Violent video games would be a good example here)

I don't care if you choose to smoke/drink or not. Once you start making retarded posts, this is when I start caring.

Quote:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Try reading that, even once, before you use your asshole to type again.

Don't be daft... Read my entire point before assuming anything and responding to what you think I said...

You're misunderstanding my point. I didn't mean it like that. I meant that you have to treat it like it isn't granting you, specifically, one out of 300million citizens, reader of the text the right but rather commanding you to grant the right unto others. And at the same time, they have to grant the right unto you.

You ARE granted everything in the bill of rights and the rest of the Constitution. But that isn't my point. In fact, it is not even relevant to what I'm saying. It's granted already.

The Constitution is just a piece of paper with writing on it. If it was destroyed, the country wouldn't be destroyed as well. That is why just reading text isn't going to dictate how people will behave. Which brings me back to what I was saying originally.

You have to first understand the rights of other citizens before you understand the rights granted unto you. In theory, that's the ideal way that the Constitution should be read in order for the country to work the way it was intended. However, ideals alone aren't enough to sway the workings of a country and its people and that was my point.

Your pre-existing rights mean shit when you live in a nation that actively denies you those rights. The Constitution was one of the earliest (if not *the*) documents for a framework of government which put the inalienable rights of mankind into a discussion that didn't involve a king putting his boot on your face.
