Football makes more sense, but I dunno what we'd call American football. We hardly use our feet in American football, though... that and it's more corrupt than our politics.

I use Soccer because that's what it's called out here.

Thing I don't understand is why people, especially those in England get upset when the term 'soccer' is used, as if they're the foremost authority on what the sport should be called, and that anyone on the other side of the Atlantic is some sort of stupid prat.

American football is called football because the ball is an odd shape that is exactly 1 foot in length.

The name describes the ball used, not how it's used.

Also rugby and football are two different (although similar) sports:

We did invent the sport, so I guess we have a small amount of authority over what it's called. Razz

That being said, I really couldn't care.

I think that the name of the sport depends on the language it is used in.

In British English, there are a lot of difference with American English. (Color vs Colour, ect) So I think Football and Soccer fall into that situation.

Football is the name of several similar team sports, all of which involve (to varying degrees) kicking a ball with the foot in an attempt to score a goal. The most popular of these sports worldwide is association football, more commonly known as just "football" or "soccer".

Since language is meaningless if not used as a method of communication, and since I live in the US, I say Soccer. I can definately see the case for calling it "football", though, and I switch over when I'm traveling abroad.

In German class we call it football and I know what it is referring to because Germans say "American football" instead of football. Soccer is called football.

Every so often, I get this positive feeling that humanity can somehow, possibly attain pure awesomeness, and enlightenment, and that there is light at the end of the road for us all. However, I only need to go to the latest HUD thread at RenForums to remind me of how dumb I was for thinking such stupid things.

In football you use your feet to control the ball. Therefore the American version should technically be called handball, since you primaraily use your hands to control the ball. Logical.

Oh, just FYI, an alternative theory for the reason it's called football actually has nothing to do with kicking a ball, but with the fact it was a game played with a ball on foot, rather than on horseback as many sports used to be.

We invented it. It's called football. American football is called 'American football, not 'football'. Why Americans thought they could just call it football even though that's actually a totally different game, I have no idea.
It's a bit like calling a game with only Two countries involved the 'World Series', and it's victors 'World Champions'. No one would be arrogant enough to do that... Oh, wait... Sarcasm

Like I said, it's a language barrier.

We named American Football 'Football' because the "ball" is oddly shaped and measures about 1ft long in length. The name of the sport describes the ball itself rather than how it's handled.

To the other guy who mentioned 'handball.' That's a totally different sport played with a little rubber bouncy ball, a wall, and the palms of your hand.

Now, now! You just know that some archaeologist in a remote part of China will discover that Soccer was invented sometime during the Qin Dynasty. Mr. Green

But anyhow, who cares? Why is it that people care so much about what the sport is called?

When I was in York in '04, a bud and I were eating lunch and Soccer was on the TV in the pub. I made a comment about Soccer being on the TV in the pub, and some moron nearby, completely unprovoked, goes on a tirade about it being called football, and that we 'American's' are all wrong, and that we all suck, and all that drivel. He called me the wrong thing (American), but I didn't get upset about it, nor did I even politely correct him.

Half my family is Australian. To them, 'football' is Aussie Rules, and Soccer is 'Association Football.' They call our version of football, 'gridiron' but you don't see us North Americans upset about that. Seems like it's only the English who care way too much about what soccer is called. That's been my observation.
