I feel that there are many more people deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize than he is. Especially because his name was submitted within two weeks of his election win.

Thing worth mentioning though is that it's a mainly European organization, so in my opinion, this was something of a cynical jab by Europe in order to either provoke or berate America.

I was surprised at this to be honest but dont forget, Obama is hugely popular in Europe and around the world. I read he got this becasue of his many diplomatic efforts especially in the middle east.

I would agree though, there were probably more deserving people.

Yeah, didn't you hear? Nobel is now giving prizes to the people who don't do anything but say they will do something.

The road I cruise is a bitch now, baby.

I was totally caught off guard on this. He has done nothing to deserve this and he even admitted he did not deserve it.

This. Nobel prizes have lost their meaning.

Why is it that you have to make retarded political statements in every thread that don't even require it? No one's making a 10 paragraph post saying Obama is the worst president ever.

If you thought my post was negative towards him, not really. It was meant to be a "Nobel prizes hardly mean anything anymore, so it doesn't come as that big of a deal to me" kinda thing.

Impotent rage? I'm not seeing any here. If GWB won the same prize, we'd all likely act the same; at least I would.

There is already a nerdrage thread at NS so I don't really want to get into another one. But I do want to say that I think he is deserving and that it was a good call.

Considering I don't even listen to Rush, yes, I'm clearly echoing him.

Get some new arguments, twat.

I was surprised but maybe it's a challenge from the committee towards Obama. In the end it's very nice to give out a prize to people who have done a lot, but giving out a prize proactively must put a lot of pressure on the shoulders of Obama. Of course the Nobel team will look like fools if he doesn't deliver, but if he does deliver then maybe they participated a tiny bit in this.

Also, who were the other candidates?

Deeming this prize undeserved is misunderstanding what the Nobel prize is meant for.

You don't get the prize if you fix your country and pull it out of debt and other local snafu's. Here is the prerequisite for getting the Nobel prize:

"to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."

Obama has scored big on the first and second point alone. Opened up and reached out to many Muslim countries more visibly than past presidents and eased tensions with Russia by cancelling missile shield.

According to the press release, the committee gave the award for him encouraging "diplomacy and cooperation"...

If there was an award for fixing your country, then Obama would not have got it. Don't confuse the two! I agree though that he has not done enough and he has a lot on his plate with the 2 wars.

edit: typo

Actually no, he wasn't nominated. He also hasn't done much to promote peace.
