You can see they aren't too pricey, and you can probably grab one at a Best Buy on sale. My network drive has saved my ass a ton of times, and will continue to do so.

As for your Vista problems, that's weird because that really shouldn't happen. I'm sure you've heard it before, and done it all, but I'd check for viruses, Microsoft updates, driver conflicts or something. Unless your computer is old, I don't think Vista should be locking up like you say it is. :/
