If I upgrade to Windows 7, can I still keep all my stuff or will it delete it?

I would really like to avoid wasting money on this. I have around 60 gb of used space, so roughly around 40gb of information that is vital to me. A dvd does not even hold 5 gb if I am correct, so that would mean wasting 8 dvds which isn't a lot, but I think it is a waste.
So, it is possible to update without erasing everything correct?
Also, would installing 7 fix the damage that hard shut downs have done? Now, I have never shut down this way unless I absolutely had to. Vista has crashed so hard so many times, I could not shut it down.

Don't really need one. Surely you have another computer with enough space? Or know someone who does? Just dump them on there and copy them back over after you do a clean install of Win7 (doing an upgrade install is inadvisable, since it almost always creates extra problems).

A decent sized external drive isn't too expensive, and it's handy for just this sort of thing. I have a network drive where I hold important stuff and files I want to keep, so I can erase or upgrade my computers as I see fit, without worrying.
Doing an 'upgrade' as opposed to a full install was a nightmare for me and I wouldn't recommend it.

Alright, well, when I get some more money in teh bank I will consider getting a small external HDD.
I'm still wondering if it will fix the speed issues/damage as a result from having to force shut down numerous times due to freezing/crashing.

You can see they aren't too pricey, and you can probably grab one at a Best Buy on sale. My network drive has saved my ass a ton of times, and will continue to do so.
As for your Vista problems, that's weird because that really shouldn't happen. I'm sure you've heard it before, and done it all, but I'd check for viruses, Microsoft updates, driver conflicts or something. Unless your computer is old, I don't think Vista should be locking up like you say it is. :/

I got a 500gb external for 90$ from bestbuy on boxing day, just look around there are some good deals.

Partition your HDD, then move all your files to one partition and (format and) install 7 on the other one.
