Why is it that most people who play Renegade today only prefer to play the standard maps?
There are some pretty amazing maps out there which in my honest opinion are far more superior to the standard maps.
As far as I know there are 2 active fan map servers
-UNRules
-St0rm custom maps

I used to love fanmaps too and I fondly remember good times on maps like Terrace (as GDI) more than a year ago on Jelly Mappack before it was shutdown.
As far as the standard maps go, I really enjoy them. Maps like Complex, Canyon, and City_Fly and Walls_Fly get me going...
It's just that the new maps are not well balanced. There are very few fanmaps that are worth playing imo...when Jelly MapPack goes back up then no doubt we will see players there as they were a year ago.

Most people are too lazy to download a mappack, that's the only reason.
When we had bunkersTS and snow in our rotation, the server always lost at least half of the players, even though there were auto announcements and join messages about the 2 fanmaps. We eventually took them out.
The auto downloader from TT will be made of pure win.

Basically what Goztow said.
Several people in the Kamuix Lite forums wanted new maps, but Mike said no because they'd lose too many players.

I can tell you why we don't host one (though goz already did). People are to lazy to download the maps. As a result the players counts are way down if not zero. No one wants to host an empty server or watch their counts get pwned over and over again.

I love fan maps, I have ubber map pack and I would play servers that host them but only one Iv seen that has people is UNRules but all theya re is bunch of noobs who bitch and call hacks

Also, a lot of the old maps in Uber Map Pack just are ugly. They should've called it Uber Fail Map Pack.  I have some of the nicest maps (in my opinion) uploaded here. Three pages of individual map downloads and I'm redoing my map pack at the moment so it's down for now.
Only thing I fear is when the next patch comes out and it auto-downloads maps for you that it would download those super ancient and ugly maps in uber map pack. :/

Navy, if he still plays there, is a dick. One time I got forcerg because I killed some kid. That server is filled with a bunch of idiots and noobs. I don't ever play there, plus it's dead most of the time.

I have most if not all of the map packs, but I choose to play on a standard map server ninety-nine out of one hundred times. I feel the majority of new maps just suck; they're either awfully huge or imbalanced. Most of the good new-maps were already put in the Core Patches, and those are the only ones I enjoy playing. Therefore, I tend to not join new map servers.

I once did download all map packs but then my PC crashed and i didnt want to do it all again.
Besides that the most populated servers where always the ones with default maps so i was playing on those almost always even when i had the packs 
And i just have to quote you a second time for this Goztow :

Some like Terrace are so drastically bias they need to be deleted off every computer in the world.
Some like Sun Fusion or Dust are a complete eyesore and buggy as hell, same recommendation as above.
Others are good looking and fair but lag like an old lady crossing the road in rush hour traffic.
Basically, newmaps are 90% phail. and the server mods nowdays are 100% phail. Renegade lacks the quality of maps and moderators it used to have. Mainly due to many people- mods and mappers alike- moving on to other games. But I have been working on a few things. I have at 2 full AOW maps pretty much only needing VIS data, and one completed instagib map (all mix format) Is ee that soem others are still making maps that is good to see, keep up the good work.
Remember, Modding is what keeps this game alive!
