SeaMan | If someone stole your work (using without proper credit and claiming it as their own), what would you do?
|
To be honest, it's happened to me and I don't care a whole hell of a lot - as long as they're not making a profit off of it, anyway. I find it complimenting that someone wants to use my work that bad.
An example being the PCT Icons that I made...Most people that use them do give me credit, but I've seen them in a few maps that don't and frankly I don't give a damn. Obviously I'd prefer having credit, but I don't care if I don't because I made the icons for that reason; so people could use them in their maps, not to glorify my own "status" in the "community".
Now obviously I definitely think people should get credit where credit is due, especially on something larger than PCT icons (Like a map, for instance). The larger and more work put into an item the more credit due, but I think people should focus more on making the game and mod community better instead of their portfolio.

Without anything like that, I would propably simply copy all maps and put my name banner on them. OMG look I made over 100 maps!
C&C_UltimateSeaSideCanyonBasinTS.mix
C&C_FieldCity.mix
(in reality, I would not do that, because I do respect the person who makes the map.. anyway, it would be a waste of time and "effort".)

Note that.
If you release something with the intentions of people using it, it's often better to just politely request credit and let it go from there rather than track down each offending thief and start a huge reputation-destroying argument over it.
A metaphor:
You have five pennies (Tib crystals), and you let people borrow them, but request them back (credit) at the end of the day. But come sunset, you only have four. Obviously it was wrong of the person to take the penny, but it's only a penny. Is it worth the time and effort to track down that person, beat them up (flame war) and take your penny back (get credit)? No, not really. Now, obviously if you have $500 (a map) and you loan that out, you're damn well going to want it all back at the end of the day, so credit is much more important. But as for the penny, it's trivial. It's much better for you to just suffer with the loss of your penny than take it out on other people (people who get involved in the flame war) to get your penny back.
But another point to be made:
When you get right down to it, there's really only two, large, well known mods out their for Renegade now, Ren Alert and Reborn. Countless hours of work have been put into each. Is it really worth trying to shut down and discredit the entire mod and team for the actions of one individual?
I haven't played Reborn, nor do I personally know any of the members on the team, but by saying "Reborn steals models" you're accusing the entire team of something that most of them are not guilty of, if even more than one member is.
"Ren Alert steals models" could be said because former member Madtone claimed someone else's models to be his own...I realized Madtone had the good character to confess, and I'm not questioning that, but it's a good example. No one is accusing the Ren Alert team of doing what just Madtone did, and no one should question the entire Reborn team for doing what just one or a few members did.

Why did you do it ack... why did you steal my "newbee" line. That was some of my best material and you took it... got some laughs... without giving me credit. I know it was small but it was all I had, you took it and cheapned it, now I am left with nothing!
Where did i put those darn marshmellows.

The way I see it if the models they were using are being removed before the final version and only used in a beta which was only supposed to be seen by a small number of people, then no harm done, mostly involved in the mods creation. I don't know anything about them stating it was theres, but there obviously saying it isn't now.
Not trying to take sides, I think both mods look cool. Just giving an opinion.

Its turned out to be a relatively intelligent post... I say leave it open for now...
I do think that it is downright wrong to be slandering the reborn team like you do Jon, it may not be as good as RenAlert, and miscommunications do happen, maybe their PR guy was under the understanding that they were made by their team, and was proud of it... Apparantly that was false, but everyone makes mistakes... I've spoken with the creator of Desert Siege and he was more than willing to provide the gmax and such for use in RenEvo when I was still around and map packs were still a high prioity, so I have no doubt that permission was given there for the Reborn team to use it...
Anyways, if you've got a beef with people using publicly released models of yours, or you feel you arn't getting the proper credit you deserve, then give them an email or something and ask what is going on rather than posting slander like this...

Minus the stealing of the maps...
It does need to be brough into the public at times, but I'm sure you could find a better was of doing so rather than your /me wipes my butt with reborn etc...

Ok, well is it fixed yet? I mean, I haven't seen any counter-postes to this so are they gonna give you credit/ give back your models?
