Not if you have a Shitway, sorry. Basically the only thing that can help you is a new graphics card.
Before you look into replacing your graphics card, turn Renegade to lowest detail settings, no shadows, 640x480, etc, and see what your FPS is. If you are getting less than 20 with everything turned off, then you definetely need a new graphics card. Check with Gateway or look inside your computer to see if it has an AGP slot. (Brown, in-line with the white ones, and kinda short compared to the 4-5 longer white ones)

Skier222 | hows that funny?
thats the thing i cant upgrade it, its intergrated

Open your case. Is there a little brown slot next to the little white slots on the motherboard? If yes, then you can get an AGP graphics card. If no, you need to get another computer.

In that case, you're pretty much screwed. Try turning ALL of the details off or to low, and the resolution to 640x480. If you get a decent fps (above 20), then you can at least play it like that. It sucks, yes, but that's better than not playing at all, right?

More system memory won't help, it's the graphics card that needs more memory, not to mention raw horespower. If you're serious about playing games though, get a desktop. I had a laptop alone for about a year and a half, and basically all I could play was System Shock 2 and Half-Life mods. I DID manage to play the entirety of Jedi Knight II singleplayer, but that was with much persistence. Now that I have an uberl33t computer, I hardly use my laptop anymore except for DVDs in the car traveling.
If you really want a laptop that has enough horsepower to play recent games, you're talking some serious cold hard cash.

Absolutely not. What you want is the GF4 MX 440 Go, GF FX ### Go, or whatever the latest Mobility Radeon chip is, with 64 megs of vram. Getting a laptop with one of those (namely the alienware laptop, to get your moneys worth), costs a pretty penny. What you might want to do instead of getting a new laptop is learn to live with the one you have, and only play stuff that will run well on basically software rendering. Half-life runs great even on a P-166 (I played through all of it on my dad's shit work laptop one trip), and there are plenty of good HL SP mods out there. System Shock 2 is another game that runs well. Just look at the system requirements for the game, and if it says it needs anything more than an 8mb graphics card, then it probably can't run well on your laptop. There are plenty of great older games that can run on your laptop, just learn to figure out which ones.

Yeah dude, if you want to play games with good FPS on a laptop, notebook, what ever....your gonna need a lot of money to get something.
Renegade relys on Processor, RAM, and Graphix Card.
You say you have an 8 MB graphix card? I have a 128. Its also a GeForce4 TI 4600. And its Titanium. o_O
I have 512 SDRAM and I cant upgrade anymore..shitty 2 y/o dell PC. How much RAM do you have?
I have a 1.4 Ghz processor. What processor speed do you have?
It all plays a part in it. I can turn my graphix down to shitty mode and I get (in 4 player games) about 60 + FPS. In 8 players, about 40ish. And in 24 players, I get about 20-40. All this FPS depends on the situation. If Im sniping a bunch of basic infantry, Ill get max. If Im running around a room full of 10 engineers shooting their repair beams fighting off 7 flame tanks while some techs run in and blow up some remote C4s, Ill get about 2-20.
Explosions/Fire/lots of "beam guns" (like volt rifle, repair beams) = lots of lag.
Try playing in small servers with your graphix on shitty mode. It should be playable.
Think of it this way. Practice like this. When you get a leet PC, you willbe an unstoppable sniper...like ACK....who I swear is invincible...

If you're getting a new laptop, these are the cards you need to look for:
GeForce 4200 Go (3)
GeForceFX 5600 Go (2)
Mobility Radeon 9000 (4)
Mobility Radeon 9600 (1)
the numbers in parenthesis is recommended order.

Gateway isn't exactly horrible. I have an old one, and renegade runs just fine, with little lag.
I upgraded my RAM to 256, from the measly amount it came with, and Renegade went fom a stuttering nightmare, to a nicely flowing game, that I enjoy even today on my "crappy" 733 MHZ oldie "Shitway".
My old NVIDIA 32 runs this application just fine. Update your card from the NVIDIA site, and upgrade with a stick of RAM. I can't see getting a new comp to run an older video game.

i just asked about the 3D S3 Prosavage because thats the 1 on my family comp.
im actually thinkin of just buying some parts and making a new one by myself. cuase i already have alot of parts lieing around from old comps like power, cases, and some other stuff that wont slow down a new comp.
i just looked at my detail level and it was High, so ill put that down some.
FYI:
Gateway 400 Notebook
1.7 GHZ Celeron
384 MB SODIMM RAM (that costs a shit load)
ATI Mobility 6 32 MB
