Can cost as much as you want it, 1.5k wil get you a good gaming computer, but xtream builders can spend 3-6k.

Assuming you mean USD (?) and you're going to put it together yourself you can get a pretty good setup for that. Just be smart with the money. The newest stuff is always a huge jump in price. Get the next step down and your money goes a lot further.

Me and a bud priced out a build using an AMD Phenom 720, ATI 4770, and DDR2 for just under 600 dollars (US) with top quality components. Not the most powerful thing, but he has only a 17" monitor anyways.

You'll want to figure out the size of your monitor/resolution in order to determine how powerful your card is. Multi-core processors like the AMD Phenom's, and Intel Core 2's/i7's are not totally used by games today, so you don't always need the most powerful processor to play new games.

If you check out this forum at 'Hardware Canucks' you'll get an idea of what people are building, and at what prices. It'll also give you some good ideas.

CPU
i7 920 D0 stepping CPU,

GPU
ATi HD 4890 CF, 4870X2 CFX, nVida 295, nVida 285 SLI or wait a little for the ATi 5870's

RAM
6 GB 2000MHz Consair Memory

HD
2 TB WD's / Data Drive
160 GB SSD HHD / OS Drive

Monitor
Try 24" or 30" screens, I recommend the Dells.

Get a blu-ray drive, get a good case, I recommend you look into water cooling this or getting a real good air sinking units, you should get a good after market cooler for the CPU and overclock it to 4GHz or so.

I could had gone into details but am too tired.

Remember when buying a GPU, you get it for the games you play and not what is the best, you should spend time reviewing each part.

For 1.000 max you should already be able to build a very nice one. Keep the rest on a bank account.

I have to agree. Unless of course, you plan on hooking it to something with a resolution of over full HD.

wtf is the point of a blue ray drive? The quality difference is negligible unless you have a huge monitor.

Also if you got in a car accident then you should pay off to fix your car and stuff, not a gaming computer.

It isn't size that matters with blue ray it is quality. You have to have the tv/monitor that has the quality to really show the HD. That being said blue ray is stupid. Fuck Sony.

I wasn't talking about size, it would be stupid to buy a 10" monitor at a very high resolution because quality diffrence is pretty small to be worth it. If you had a gigantic monitor then it would.

Depends... do you think you'll have money in the future to add things? Wink

Things like a blue ray drive can ALWAYS be added later. It's important to buy a decent motherboard which leaves you room to upgrade later on.

Personally, I wouldn't put over $1500 into a PC. The price to performance ratio beyond that price point just gets worse and worse. ~$1000 is the sweet spot, and even $600-$800 can get you a nice PC.

It just depends on if you want dual core or quad core, Intel or AMD, ATi or nVidia, or no preference. It also depends on if this is just a PC, or if you'll need an OS, monitor, speakers, keyboard, mouse, and so on. The prices I listed above were for the PC alone.

I'd watch barebone kits. They tend to cheap out on the PSU and sometimes motherboard.

IronWarrior, the parts you listed honestly don't have a good price to performance ratio. Knowing SSnipe, he's not going to want to blow it on the expensive stuff when it performs 5% better than stuff it costs 50% more than (the numbers are an example, but my point is they don't even out).

Crossfire and SLi is a waste.

SSDs are a waste.

I'm not going to trash the Core i7, but I prefer Core 2 for the time being (although for a new PC, since LGA775 is dead, it may be better to get Core i7 now).

Water cooling is probably outside his range and scope.

Yes, this stuff may be "better" than the next closest thing, but the gap is small, while the price gap is often larger. As an enthusiast myself, I'm not trashing such high range stuff, but it's not practical to recommend it to most people. From what I've seen, SSnipe always seems very conscious of budget, and is getting this money on an insurance claim. He's not even sure how much it will be yet. Unless you're willing to put in alot of time, money, and upkeep, buying a high-end PC isn't practical to most people.

I'd say spend no more than $1,000, and you'd be surprised what even $600 and $800 would do.

I purchased all the parts for my new computer for ~$1200.

I wouldn't go more than about $1500 or $2000 (absolute max).

You can get a decent computer for $600 - $1000

I got 650 watt modular psu

2 sticks of 1gb DDR2 800

a zalman cpu heat sink with smart fan control

3 hard drives

A biostar t force amd motherboard

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ 3.2GHz

GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB

Got it all around for $600 - $700 and i can run every new game on high it might be outdated soon but sure runs fast. Cpu are really cheap right now 2.

If you want a really good pc i would go wait a little bit longer until the next generation comes out.

2GB is starting to be too low for a new PC. If you're striving to put together a really cheap system like the one in that article, every dollar counts, but otherwise, the price difference between 2GB and 4GB is so little it's a moot point, and you should grab as much as you can if you're still on DDR2 before prices start going back up (they've slowly started to).

Wow, you must be living in a cave.

You only need to see Futuremark results to see the preformance on how great the i7 CPU's are and since the i7 920 is only 200 or so GPU and can be OC'ed to 4-5GHz on AIR, shit overclockers are getting them to 6-7GHz on LN2

CFX and SLi are not a waste at all, again, look at benchmarks, am using CFX now and am getting FPS gain in most games I play, including Renegade.

SSD's are not a waste at all, they are a revolution in storage, the fact that they give 0.1 or so seconds in read times, which allows for programs for example like games to start up fully soon as you click the icon while a old HDD drive can take 10-50x longer.

Have you even seen any benchmarks for them, lol?

In time, we all be moving to SSD's when the price comes down which is already happing, Intel has dropped the price on theirs twice already and there are already 1 TB SDD's with PCI-E interfances.

One thing we can agree on is that if he wants a good computer, than the next gen is almost here, nVidia GT300 GPU's are almost here, DX11 and ATi's 5870X2 as well as Intels i5 CPU's.

Well, he has a budget of $1500, which is enough for all that.

He could build a i7 920, 6 GB DDR3, 1600MHz, nVidia 260 SLI/275/280, 4870X2 x2 CFX or 4980 CF for about $1000 from newegg of cause, all depends on the hardware models of cause.

Spending $1000-$1500 is a lot of money, it shouldn't be a rush, the best advice that anyone should give him is to research the different parts, look at every website for different prices and mess around with different builds, ask at computer hardware forums for advice.
