He likely gave consent to such a decision before he underwent surgery. This is a fairly common thing that happens with hysterectomies. Most women go in for a partial hysterectomy but because it is impossible to really know what's in there without getting in there and looking around there are cases where a doctor decides to perform a full hysterectomy completely removing the uterus if he thinks that there may be some danger to the patient.

I'm not sure he gave such consent, but he probably did.
