P4s are expensive, small information bottle neck, and dont handle grafical as good and an AMD, AMD is the best you can get, its faster then P4 and cheaper, but if you have to get a P4 the only real differnce is the price

what ever you do DO NOT get a celeron THAY SUCK

i sell computers for a living, and i have to say athalons are not very good, a 2 ghz athalon against a 2ghz p4 - the athalon is faster and cheaper but not as good quality, there was a survey done and the athalon has a flaw, something like ti does not clear its cache and so it can not stay on for huge periods of time, where as a p4 can stay on indefinatly without errors, (my one has been on for 3 weeks) but on the other hand a celeron just 100% sucks! did you know at trade prices a 1 ghz celeron is about 100 pounds cheaper than the same ghz p4?

also somethign intresting, a athalon is a lot cheaper than a p4, but for each athalon sold, amd make more money than intel

I have run AMD chips for years. I am currently running an AMD XP 2000+ and it works great. It runs as fast as a P4 2Ghz but it was cheaper. It does require a lot of cooling though. I have a Thermaltake Volcano 11+ on the chip and it still runs fairly hot.

People who I have spoken to in real life and on the internet didn't understand what the AMD XP was and always assumed the Pentium 4 was the fastest CPU. My AMD XP 2000+ runs at 1.67Ghz but equals the performance of a Pentium 4 2 Ghz. ALthough when you get to the AMD 3000+ it does fall behind in video editing slightly.

As for the Celeron, it doesn't suck. It's a great chip, it's just not as good at handling the latest games, it was never designed to, it was designed as a cheaper alternative to the top of the range Pentium, like the Duron was, the reason they developed the chips into the Ghz speeds and above.

Liquid cooling is good and all but make sure you know what your doing and be very careful when installing, or you will end up w/ a worthless motherboard and CPU.

What do you have now? Do you have a Athlon/P4/P3 system?

When do you want to upgrade? New processors come out in two months. Athlon-64 will hit the street, and P4 Prescott will hit for Intel. Even if these will be out of your price range, it will bring current chips down in proce alot.

If it has to be now, I would say go the Intel route. A Intel roadmap right now has a better upgrade path. We will likely not see a AXP chip past 3400+. A newer Intel board will give you a path to at least a 4ghz Prescott.

My recomendations for building now:

Intel route:
Abit IS7-E (865PE chipset) - 93.00
Pentium4 2.4C (800mhz FSB) - 172.00
512MB PC2700 DDR (nice sticks, too) - 80.00 (2 sticks, CL2)

AMD route:
ASUS A7N8XD - 125.00
Barton 2800+ OEM - 173.00
Same RAM as above - 80.00
Swiftech MCX462+ - 40.00
a 92mm fan - 12.00

Yeah you read it a bit wrong. The AMD XP starts to lose performance against the Pentium 4 as the speed gets higher. This means that the newer AMD chips, XP 3000+ & XP 3200+ are slightly slower than the P4 chips running at that speed. However the earlier chips are quite good at offering a similar performance to their P4 equivilent.

The only way it can get slower over time is if the heat is building up, IE your running it with a cheap aluminium heatsink with no case fans next to your radiator or something like that.

Remember: You cannot brake a CPU so it is slower. A CPU will either work or won't it's that simple. You can't brake it and say it has got slower since you sropped it.

Lets say i will build a custom computer using tantus ( http://www.tantuscomputers.com/systems/highend_gaming.php )
I will spend about 300$$ on the processer wich gives me these choices

A) Atholon XP 2800

B) Atholon XP 3000

C) Pentium 4 @ 2.6gtz

And maybe a

D) Pentium 4 @ 2.8gtz

Wich would be the best choice??

Just forget about this question right now. It's impossible to predict what prices will look like or what speeds will be out in Feb. or so.

In the next couple of months, we will see if Intel, who is banking on a larger cache and a redesigned core, or AMD, who is banking on 64-bit instructions, made the right choice.

Personally, I think Intel will take this round from AMD.
