I have always known it's bad for them, but it's much quicker to do (especially when the tower is on the floor and to get to the button you have to actually reach around the disk tray), and they are fairly cheap to replace anyway. So I just give em a shove to close them Been doing it with my disk drives for as long as I can remember, and have yet to have one actually break because of it. Maybe I just got lucky so far...
Also, if you do push them to close them, don't push it all the way, just pushing it little bit usually triggers the motor to pull it in for you.
