One that some people fall for is a "real" check they receive.

Often its a "Loan for college". The person is sent a VERY REAL looking check, by certified mail, with an amount OVER what they ask for, and is told to cash the check, and wire the difference in cash back to the scammer.

The person cashes the check, and the bank APPROVES it, because banking methods in the USA are archaic and backwards, and security is lax (This is documented by the FBI, they are sick of having to take cases because the bank wasnt careful). The person uses the fake money in their account to wire the transfer for the accidental "overpayment" to the scammer.

30 to 90 days later, when the bank finally finds out the check was no good, they tell the victim "Your check was no good, we'd like our $30,000 immediately".

One person I have read of in the newspaper could have faced jail time for fraud - and she was the victim in this same scheme.
