ive recently tried to play renegade in windowed mode, primarily to see a small window of irc down the bottom
the problem is, when i play in windowed mode, by changing the settings in the renegade config program, the gameplay screen is much darker than the normal size screen. it is just too dark to play.
when i manually change the brightness, gamma, contrast settings from the ingame options screen nothing happens, the game screen does not get any brighter if i set it to full.
does anyone know why and any other way to fix this problem

Could be several things...
Try some things first, like for example:
1. Update you GPU drivers.
2. Set everything as default after doing that.
3. Start the game to see if that helped.
4. if not, what script version are you running for Ren?
the rest comes when you've tried the first 4

Scripts version does not matter for gamma controls 
The brightness controls from ingame don't work in Windowed mode because it's using the brightness levels set for your desktop. Try adjust them in your video card driver's control panel.
