So ive just installed Win7 and I was wondering if anyone else has and if so what do you make of it? How would you compare it to XP and then how would you compare it to Vista?

From what I have seen and read, I can say the following:
- I am displeased with the new shell
- I am displeased with the new taskbar
- They are trying to make simple things more complex (wordpad for example)

I'll stick with Server '08 for now.

Did you "acquire" a beta release of it or something?

I'm guessing he downloaded Windows 7 off a torrent, because the only legal way(afaik) to get it was to be at PDC 2008, which was near the end of October.

It's supposed to be more stable than Vista and requires less than Vista(from what I've heard), they are also making a new version of paint and making a complete new version of the Calculator, tbh I would be interested to see the final product(for once).

PS. Pretty much anything you need to know about it, look here: http://www.winsupersite.com/win7/

PSS. Windows 7 is not the 7th version of Windows for those thinking it is just because it's called that.
"No matter how you count it, Windows 7 is not the seventh release of Windows."(http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/win7_name.asp).

Windows 7 is version (Major) 7. Vista=6, XP=5.
Versioning=Major.Minor.Build.Revision.

Quote:

In any event, Microsoft is positioning Windows 7 as a major release of the OS though the company has yet to justify that description.

3.1 (base), 95 (build differentiation), 98 (build differentiation), = Major 3
2000 (base), ME (build differentiation), NT (build differentiation) = Major 4
XP (base) = Major 5
Vista (base) = Major 6
7 (base) = Major 7

I'm probably off a bit, but still. The creator of that site isn't one to question the developers making Windows. They have every right to version it how they want to. Razz

The reason some will probably say its not justifyble to be a major release change is that its meant to be more of an upgrade in a sense that Microsoft is targeting Windows 7 at being fully compatible with previous drivers from Vista (among many other reasons). What you won't here about on the public side of things from ordinary people is about the deep details of Microsoft Cloud Services which is designed to bring an entirely new user experience. I'm sure Microsoft has a few other things up their sleeve at this point, but I won't go into my personal opinions in that aspect. Wink

Windows 7(Version Wise) is 6.1(Microsoft said themselves somewhere and Vista was 6.0), but they just decided to slap on the 7.

I've been buying MSFT for a while, and I'm looking forward to Windows 7's release. The fact that it can run very efficiently on 1GB of RAM, and a 1GHz processor (aka VIA powered netbook) warms the cockles of my heart. It means that Microsoft is indeed listening to their customers, and that they are taking the competition seriously, now, so we'll all win.

Haven't downloaded it yet. Once I finished my Linux course ile take a look at the new Microsoft stuff.
I must say, I haven't really used Vista as main OS. Just in virtual machine. And I noticed the huge memory/resource hog it was. It didn't even make it to one of my desktops.
So far Windows 7 looks alot more promising then Windows Vista.
One thing: Windows 7 and Intel Core I7 concidence Razz

Ok so tbh I dont really care if this is the 7th version of windows or not and its not what I was asking. I was asking if people have installed it and what they thought of it.

My first impressions were that it was exactly like vista. I installed the Win7 Basic Edition and it looks just like my friends Vista basic. The new taskbar I like but I still prefer the old XP style probably because its what im use to.

Wordpad looks like a cut down version of Microsoft Word 2007 which is ugly.

It doesn't seem to like mIRC and prompts up an error when you close it down but thats to be expected. Its wifi detection is horrid, one moment it finds the connection and I have internet and the next it says its an unidentified connection and stops receiving packets.

Grrr this "oh I see a problem with your internet ill try and fix for you" is really annoying for 2 reasons; 1) it doesn't work. 2) It lags real bad.

Internet Explorer 8 seems a lot easier and faster to use than Explorer 6. I never did bother to install 7 since I heard it was useless.

Here are a few SS's I have taken. If you would like to know what XYZ looks like please do ask and ill take a SS.

Windows 7 is still in pre-beta, so forming opinions of it at this early stage is utterly pointless, as everything could change between now and release. Hence why I see no point in actually obtaining it, since what you get now in no way reflects the final product.

But I must say I am looking forward to the new taskbar, and I personally think the new Wordpad looks a lot better than the old one, even though it does take up a shitload of screen space for a toolbar.

Yeah you're correct, there is no guarantee that what I am using now will even remotely look and feel how the finished product does but 9 times out of 10 it is. Im expecting things not to work, I means its a beta so obviously its not going to work however things like the wordpad which have been stupidly stupefied so even a 2 year old can use it is a real put off for me. The same can be said for paint. I know this is in its early stages of development however it just feels like vista. Which for me and probably many others is a turn off... Take Solitaire for an example they had to make it look all pretty.. I just want to play the game not require a supercomputer to load the graphics for it. Thats what I hate about vista/this beta.

I just loaded the CPU/Ram usage gadget which is great however, when I drag the gadget to move it it uses 18% of processing power to do so. (That isn't what XP is detecting with taskman, its what Win7 is detecting)

I don't like IE8, ever since I downloaded it, our computer has been running much slower. About the only download speed has improved since we got a higher internet connection.

No one particular thing really, I just like the colour scheme and overall package better than any previous version of Windows. I suppose a good example would be the All Programs shortcuts not using up the whole bloody screen just because it has a lot of items on it, and instead scrolling within the Windows menu.

I often get the impression that people say they hate Vista simply because they have heard someone else say they hate it.

I will not upgrade unless:

A. There is a minimum of obnoxious hand-holding in both the OS and its associated applications, or at least a simple, intuitive way to disable the hand-holding 'features' completely.

B. The system requirements are reasonable.

C. The DRM is no more obnoxious than XP's before WGAN appeared.

D. There is a minimum of latency in performing basic tasks such as opening folders, copying files, and deleting files.

E. I do not have to click through umpteen warnings and notifications to install a program or change a setting.

F. There is built-in support for at the minimum applications dating to Win2k.

I very much doubt I will be upgrading again, ever.

A) Ive read that this will be possible

B) Requirements so far seem better then vista.

C) Not too sure on that

D) Things seem to open instantaneously, copying files from drive to drive seems to be as quick as XP.

E) Refer to A)

F) Can't comment on

Edit:

While opening files and copying seems to be alright, its taken me 10mins to install MSN Live. I dont know whether thats normal since I use 7.5 normally but its has taken quite a long time to install.

I read an article mentioning that Windows 7 is built off of Windows Vista engine, making it compatible with everything that worked with Vista. Probably not as good as you'd like, but it's something.

I would really only use Win7 if I was forced to(if it came with the computer) or I would just prefer using XP, Vista is too unstable imo, and I did try to live with that annoying UAC but at one point it stopped me from extracting files to a location so I have it turned off again.
